Replacement HD for 8890?

Thread Starter
I got an 8890 a couple years back and the hard drive recently crapped out on me. So I'm looking for a replacement. Any suggestions?

I've looked at the Travelstar 7k100, but I'm not sure if it'll be compatible. Does the 8890 support SATA? And do I have to buy another bracket?

Unfortunately, that notebook does not support SATA. Only more recent notebooks do [need i915 chipset or better].

What is your budget? I would definitely get a 7200RPM drive if you are going for best performance. Hitachi makes a well-built drive in my opinion. However, they do click a bit [when data is accessed/written], and run a bit warm . . .but, that is to be expected of all 7200RPM 2.5" notebook drives.

A Seagate 7200RPM drive will run quieter and also will have less clicking. Currently, only Hitachi and Seagate make 7200RPM notebook drives.

I don't think you can go wrong with either drive.

I too would recommend the Hitachi disks and definitely a 7200 RPM is worth the money.

And as Atremis said it must be a PATA (parallel ATA).

I have a Sager 8890 and Im interested in getting a hitachi 7200rpm hard drive to use in my 3rd bay where the tv tuner card use to be. The only thing Im worried about is will the hard drive come with a bracket to hold the drive in place? Does anybody know where I can get one.

Sager (or other Clevo vendors) are the only place you will be able to get the 3rd disk bay bracket. The Hitachi disk does NOT come with any mounting hardware.

If Sager has the kit it will include the bracket, screws and an short adaptor cable that connects the disk drive to the socket in the 3rd disk drive bay.

You may find that the kit is very hard to come by as the 8890's are now well out of production. You may care to try ebay.

One thing to note about the disk in the 3rd drive bay is that it will get hot. I have recorded disk temps about 56 degC during summer which is at the extreme end of the disk's operating limits. You will also notice that the data transfer rate is a lot slower than if the disk is in one of the other bays. It is almost not worth putting a 7200 RPM disk in there as you will not gain anything in performance over a 5400 RPM disk due to internal bus limitations.

Thanks for the info Aussie. But I read in another thread that you must have the same hard drive speed not two different HD speeds. Something about the bios or setting the jumper. It wont recognize it. Can you clarify this for me? And would you suggest putting any type of HD in the 3rd bay?Is it even worth it. Please shead some light on this. thanks

The requirement for matching hard drives only applies if you are setting up RAID. Bay 3 (where the TV tuner is located) does not support RAID. For RAID the drives must be in bay 0 (under the battery) and bay 2 (left rear bay to the left of the DVD/CD drive). The switches are located under the keyboard (about where the "5" key is) and enable or disable the RAID configuration.

I have a HD in the 3rd drive bay on both my 8890's. One has a slower 5400 RPM disk the other a left over 7200 RPM. The disks are scratch and/or on the fly backup disks (i.e. when I really need to backup recent work and don't have an external disk handy). You do have to watch they don't overheat in summer conditions (we get 35 deg C ambient some days). I shut them down pretty agressively when the temp goes that high.

You wouldn't happen to have an extra 3rd bay HDD bracket for the 8890 lying around would you?

Wish I did but since it is not a part that is going to break in a hurry only bought the two of them - one for each laptop. Sorry vman465.

You may be better off getting an external 2.5" notebook drive USB enclosure.
The one I use is from Bason

Thanks for your help Aussie. If in the future you come across one, Please let me know. Can't find it anywhere. Sager discontinued them. So all is left now is to drink. later!
