New Hard Drive / Is This Slow?

Hell, ya'll.

I swapped out my 60 gig HD for a 100 / 7200 RPM drive. I put the 60 in an external case.

I ran a benchmark on both.

60 Gig External USB=24 MB/S
100 Gig Internal=93.6 MB/S

Is that slow, or about right (sorry, but no idea.)

Why would one be almost 75% slower (USB?) I just have nothing to compare to.

TIA,

That isn't too bad actually.

Using HD Tach I get ~ 115Mb/s 60Gb Internal and ~35Mb/s External 250Gb USB (These are just benchmark speeds not neccesarily real world in use speeds.)

Usb is pretty slowed when compared to an internal drive. I'm sure someone will say firewire is faster, although I'm not sure how much I've never used it.

I would say because of the USB speed. USB isn't very good for transferring. It's pretty inconsistent. I have a similiar set up except that instead of taking out my internal then using that for an external, I just bought a 250GB 7200rpm drive and put it in an enclosure. My internal is an 80GB 7200rpm drive that is far quicker. I'm pretty sure that it is entirely because of the USB interface.

Try firewire.. USB takes up system resources, that could be the reason

Are we talking about average speeds here? Some of your guys numbers are far fetched.

about average speeds here
++++++++++++++++++

Mine was average spped according to test.

But, hey, when I went in and looked at the details, I saw something about USB 1.1.

I just reinstalled everything. I wonder if I have the wrong setup for my USB 2.0 on the 9300?

Can someone tell me how / where to check, and where to get the drivers? I downloaded what I thought were the correct drivers from the dell.com site.

And, also, I don't get the "THIS COULD BE FASTER WITH USB 2.0" message when I plug in the drive, so I just assumed it was 2.0.

How do I know?

TIA,

SAS

USB 2.0 us much faster than 1.1 . make sure you have 2.0 installed if you want any kind of decent transfer rates. usb isnt geared to be an awesome for transfering. i have been thinking about it and odds are i wont be getting an external because i hate slow speeds like that.
