I wanna buy a Tecra M2 for gaming... - Page 2

What a bastard. What does $15 matter out of €550. He could have at elast held on to all the extras for a couple of days so you could at least take it home and play with the laptop. Then give them to you when you show up with the other $15.

I've never heard anybody complain about the screens on these. Could it be the resolution? What resolution are the other screens that you are comparing it to, also xga? (I'm assuming this M2 is xga as most 14" are and xga is the default option on these).

I've been using a 14" screen for quite a while and I find it to be the perfect size for maintining mobility.

As for the brightnes adjustments, it might be a software function that requires one of the Toshibaware applets and maybe it's not installed. IIRC, Fn-F6 and F7 are the right keys. How far down screen brightness goes when you unplug it ois something that can be adjusted in the power management applets. You can adjust these so that the screen stays on full brightness until the battery drops and then gets dimmer if you like. There are a ton of settings to play with.

Laggy touchpad and low 3dmark2001 score are suspicious, but probably software/malware related. Did the guy format and do a clean install of everything? Could there be some spyware or virus hanging out? I've heard complaints about the touchpad buttons being stiff in the M3, but never heard any complaints about the M2. Does it seem slow in any other way? I 'd think that idf there were a hardware problem with the GPU, then you'd be lucky to even see anything on the screen.

I'm getting a M2V (I don't game or do anything that needs the gpu) delivered some time next week (I hope) as well. I don't know why I felt like sharing that, I guess I'm just anxious to upgrade this aging P3 that I've been using.

The guy said he did a clean format 2 weeks ago and barely used it in the meantime. Yeah, the 15$ thing really pissed me off, especially after i went with my car to his place! i did suggest he holds on to all the extras like FDD and PCMCIA, but he kept saying "i can't do anything with them". If the laptop woudn't have such a nice price, i would have punched him in the face right there, even if i'm only 18 old and that guy was like 25, i would have kicked his ass so bad we would have begged me to take the notebook for half the price

i'm still concerned about the 3DMark2001 score, but if i format the HDD and set a nice new WinXP with OmegaDrivers it's impossible that i don't get at least 6k, right? Could it have been that the laptop was on some kind of low-power mode? the owner doesn't know shit about it, if he sais it holds 4h, then it's probably on low-power mode right? altho it was on AC when i ran 3DMark01.
could the old drivers on toshiba.com give less points in 3DMark01 than OmegaDrivers?
what programs do i need to install except the "Toshiba Utilities for Windows XP" from toshiba website?

g00nter, i'm happy to hear your getting a Tecra M2 too

any advices on what could be the cause of the low score? low-power mode?
i'll be buying the laptop in a few hours

I'd say load all the drivers that are on the website. You'll find newer versions there than what are on the restore cd. It might be better with the Omega drivers you mentioned, than with the the drivers from Toshiba. But to tell you the truth, since I don't game I haven't followed those very closely. My overall impression, based on these forums, is that they do seem to work better than the stock ones. You could even try with teh stock drivers, bench it, then get the omega ones, install them and becnh it again to see if there is a difference.

Also load the power management and utilities from there and see how it goes. Some of the other programs will probably contain the extended keyboard functions (like adjusting the screen brightness, programing the extra buttons)and all that stuff.

Good luck & I hope everything works out well!

i hope so, or else i'll be in sooo much trouble...
i'm thinking of getting this mouse on monday: http://www.microsoft.com/products/in...1eba4&type=ovr
i can get it for about 20$, nice price for a wireless microsoft, right?
Sounds pretty good. I've never shopped for one so I'm really not familiar with the prices, but I know that MS mice wireless or not tend to be pricey.

NEWS FLASH: Omega Drivers don't work! after i install them and reboot the system, i get an error message which says that they are incompatible with my Win version

guys, pls check my new topic called "Formatting Tecra M2 - need advice for drivers " because i still get some low scores in 3DMark01 and 03 and there is something wrong with my CPU, i think it runs at low-power mode during the tests!
are you running it with AC power on?
Thread Starter
yes i am
okay cause running it on battery will cause a drop on score

ok...so why am i getting such a low score? something is very weird, as i said in the other topi, if i change the res. to 640x480 i get NO better frame-rates....normally i should have gotten a lot more with a far smaller res.

so wtf am i doing wrong? am i missing a driver i need to install?

fidget, how is your CPU speed shown in Win ? mine is always at 600MHz shown, even if i set it to max performance in all utilities
post #33 of 38
mine appears at its full speed.....

i don't understand anything now...i just did another 3DMark01 test and got 3500 points!!! with the same video drivers....

how do u make your CPU stay at max speed?
i dont make mine stay max

well i think mine doesn't stay at max speed during 3DMark01, i think that's why i get these low scores and big differences between tests, i did another test now and got 4250, so i got a performance differece between tests of almost 30% which is NOT normal

ok, i found the problem, it's the CPU staying always at 598MHz!
i did a SiSoft Sandra 2005 cpu arithmetic benchmark and i got 5 times less the sscore a Pentium M 1.6GHz would get and about the same score as a PIII at 500MHz.
I even flashed the latest BIOS from Toshiba but no improvement, i can't make the CPU to run at it's max speed of 1600MHZ it's set in all utilities and programs including bios to run at "max speed" and it still runs at 598MHz
what can i do ?

Kenner, check THIS out. It's a guy with worse scores than yours on a dell with a similar config (at least same GPU). Looks like he got some other drivers for the card and his scores went up to just under 6k.
