New Toy alert!

Managed to get an 8-drive firewire enclosure for myself the other day.

Soon I shall have 2Tb of extra storage for my lappy
post #2 of 20
Wow! Do you really need that much, though?

Think of all the adult movies you could store!

Good GOD, man! That's insane. Is it top secret how much that setup cost?

(and holy cow, I think he plans to take over the world!)

Thats amazing, we are still deploying EMC Clariion SANS that only have 1.5tb on them. Those suckers cost around 50k for 2tb.

Actually it doesn't cost that much... a few hundred for the enclosure itself and then the costs of the drives.

As for the why behind this... 60Gb simply isn't enough, and I'd rather spend a bit on an enclosure compared to constantly spending $ on DVDs and searching through a mountain of discs for stuff. Besides, it's a cool little party favor for LAN parties and the like

The nifty thing here is that its daisy chainable... both to client/server systems and to other enclosures. Who knows, I might pick up a few more and really have some fun with this thing

Lemme get home and I'll see what can be done. Got to warn you though, it's not pretty (the case is off since I don't have a 3.5" mount for the drive as of yet... should be here tomorrow)

That said, I found some nice, cheap drives to start off the enclosure... eventually these drives will go into another system (WD1200JB, 7200RPM/8Mb cache).

Here's a little catch for you though. Anyone who wants to get a single/dual/quad/octal enclosure should know that unless it's an extern HD, that you'll need to connect the HD to be put into the enclosure directly to a computer.

Sorry guys, PNP isn't that good yet to detect such things.

Now if you choose to use a network connection to the enclosure as opposed to a firewire enclosure, it's a different story.

oooh... perhaps I should get a second one and just use some SCSI drives for the fun stuff

Decisions, decisions...

BTW: sorry guys no porn on my machines or HDs... it's kinda like watching football (i.e.; always more fun to play the game than to watch it)

Yoda, I was looking at those on ebay too. However, the ones that I saw all had 8 firewire ports on them. If thats the case for yours, do you have to hook up to 8 firewire ports to access all the drives at once?

Nopes... you can connect 2HDs to each one of those ports (remember, the back of those are divided into 4 firewire slots, with two connections each).

1 Connection should allow access to all the drives on that board. Now this leaves the other 6 unattended... so you daisychain them with either a firewire hub, or directly from one firewire card to another with the port that is left empty.

That *should* do the trick.

BTW: Beware of E-bay with a lot of those guys... they're really overpriced (though GDI seems to do good work... and uses better power supplies). A lot of the enclosures on E-bay are either under-powered, or cannot support the larger HDs.

IBM Deathstar (a.k.a Deskstar)

Just be glad you don't have four IBM deathstars. IBM is being sued right now because of these hard drives. That is probably why IBM sold their Storage division to Hitachi. I have four IBM 10000 rpm SCSI hard drives. I had one 3 years and it failed. I knew it wouldn't make it to it's MTBF estimate. Now I'm worried that the other three might be going tits-up within the year.

I was on a project about 5 years ago where we swapped out 2500 Western Digital drives from 2500 HP Vectra VL4 workstations. These were cavair 1200's and the upper bearing seal would leak allowing lubricant to get sprayed all over the platter. The needle would hit a glob of lube and BAM dead drive.

On the other hand i have had excellent results from both Travelstar and Deskstar drives.

Time-Pilot,

Actually it's on StyleXP.org as one of the boot screens (I like it enough to use it when I get off my behind and play around and put it on).

Actually I managed to get a deal with the WD... Circuit City made a mistake and was selling the 120Gb drives for a good price ($20 after MIB). That said, they screwed up at the register and I ended up with both of them for $0.

I'm not storing anything that can't be replaced (or won't be backed up) so I'm not too worried about it... besides, the particular model just won it's 5th award for this year. Besides, if it only lasts a year or two, it was free so I don't feel so bad.

Now if anyone is interested, CompUSA is currently offering the 200Gb Seagate 7200RPM with 8Mb cache for $100 which isn't too bad a price for a large capacity drive.

BTW: for those interested in the extern enclosure, I've found the Oxford chipset seems to work best for those.
