Sager NP5680 black screen

Hello,

I have a Sager NP5680, bought it in March 2004.
I did not have any problems until today, when after returning to my desk, I realized there is a black screen and no matter what I couldn't make it work.
I've reboot the unit a few times, but no change...after rebooting I can hear the fan working but no image...tried to connect an external monitor (Fn/F7)...and again no image...I have an external wireless card, the power led is not on anymore ( there is a red led that usually is on when power is on)....also no green leds are on ( left from the power button) ...
I really apreciate any suggestion on what coud be wrong.... "of course" I have no extended warranty
I do not know if it has any importance, but right before this happened, I' ve connected an external keyboard/usb.
Thank you again.

wasted my money

Well, some tech from Sager called back, I tried first to make sure is not the ram memory...is not , so looking at all facts....no image at all, LCD/external monitor, no hard disk activity.....I have some very good chances is the motherboard....and to replace it will cost me around 640 plus shipping.
The laptop is 23 months old, with no more than 4 hours per week of use and never moved from my office..…Looking to some comments in this forum , I see a lot of other people with the 56xx models having similar problems after not even 2 years...what can I say...after almost a year to debate which laptop is for me, after deciding that this Sager model is a very performing laptop and after spending over 2,500 $ for what I thought is a top of the line laptop (3.2 MHz, 1Gb/ram…metallic blue color)…....the final conclusion is that : I wasted my money on a p of s…..don't want to upset some people here saying a little bit more ... these laptops are not reliable, Clevo should definitely try to improve their quality standards...I don't think is acceptable to replace the motherboard on a laptop that costed 2,500 after not even 2 years …plus a lot of more other issues on these models…..but of course who cares…I understand now why these laptops are not sold in regular stores... Sager has a very good niche …young people that want the best and usually don’t make a big deal from issues like these…reliability. who cares ?

Unfortunately I have to agree. I feel like I spent way too much on my 5680, especially with the custom paint. I baby mine, so I've had fewer problems than most, but I've had issues with getting it to charge the battery. Sometimes I'll remove the AC adapter and it'll just go dead. The LCD bracket it also insanely tight on mine, as it is with pretty well all of them, but I haven't seen the usual cracked lid (yet) because I don't move it around much.

I'm paranoid of static electricity, with all the shock-bang-poof horror stories I read about...

I've also had a burned out CCFL, but that's just the way those things are.

I'm considering trying to sell my 5680 and purchasing an Alienware with the longest warranty possible. I'm starting to think that it's a bad idea to own an expensive laptop with an expired warranty.

Just a hunch.. so you say it does fire up? try replacing the cmos battery... it maybe in issue with your video card..

I have had a similar problem on all 4 of my sagers (black screen but lights go on and hard drive spins). For me it was because the Sager burns out memory. Check out what I said on this thread.

I know it doesn't seem like it would be a memory issue, but I got the same problem and it was. If you have two memory sticks you can try just using one and then just the other (swapping them in and out). If you have access to another work computer you could pull out one of its working memory sticks and try it. My bet is that it is the memory.

I am not certain this is the same issue as the other one...here he says his fans are working, the thread is a dead laptop that will not power up at all.

One thing you can say about the 5680 is that as a desktop replacement running a desktop processor, it gets HOT.

Had you ever opened this baby up and cleaned out the insides?

It could be a burnt out motherboard, but it could also be a burned cpu....a burnt motherboard at $600 is to expensive to replace, but a p4 northwood processor could probably be had for less than $20 on ebay...you may even have one in another machine you could swap in as a test.

I had this same problem along with the blinking locked lights in the led panel and shutdow problem associated with it, I called Sager immediately after this occoured as my comp was 6 mo old and still under warranty. I was told this was no big deal by their Customer suypport and to check the fans and make sure they had adequate air flow. Of course as we all now know this comp was designed without adequate cooling and this was the motherboard "cooking". I continued to have the probelm intermittantly for nearly 9 months untill it got to the point where turning the machine on and off would not bring up anything except a black screen. I sent the machine RMA back to Sager where they told me it was a video card problem and for $ 325.00 they replaced the video card and returned it to me(after a 2 month jerk off fest where they would not accept my credit card ,even though this is my 2nd laptop purchase). After I fired it up less than 6 times the black screen was back. Customer service said they fixed the "video problem" . I also noticed that after it was returned to me 1 of the cooling fans had stopped working and there was a arcing sound at times when I fired the machine up. I contacted Sager and they told me I could return the computer(at my expense) and have it "fixed (also at my expense) and they could "look at it". As I didnt want to spend more money on the repairs than the cost of the comp I declined and continued to use it. I was able to use it with infrequent reboots untill both the wireless card and the network card went out within 2 days of each other at the same time as the black screen probelm was getting much mote frequent. I comntacted Sager about this and once again they wanted me to return the comp at my expanese for repairs. The only difference is the tech said its the controller card on the motherboard. I think as I am having 3 problems that seem to be related it probally a controller issue and tghis is the first honest answer I have recieved from them since I bought this machine. I can currently looking at this site in hops of finding parts to fix this problem as Sagers ability to Repair computers seems to be from my experience about the same as mine and I have never opened a laptop in my life. I would prefer to try fixing this myself before I would ever send a machine back to Sager for service. I asked the tech if I could buy the motherboard or chip and have it shipped to me and was told they would not sell parts. So if your considering buying a Sager be aware that you have to use their CS and it has proved to be incapable of troubleshooting problems IMHO. If anyone knows where I can get partys for my 7620 please let me know by replying or e-mail me at Nhtaol@hotmnail.com

your computer was not a 5600 series, but I think it was the d700t from clevo

parts are hard to come by

laptopking.com and excelcomputerinc.com occasionally have parts for clevos,

Your particularly problem sounds two-fold...motherboard and fans,

While the gpu was a discrete graphic processor, it was not replaceable like the current crop of laptops
