Palm T/X vs. Axim x51

As you all know tax deductions are closing in and I am set on getting a new handheld. Im torn between two that are priced near the same. The palm t/x and the Dell Axim x51. I have narrowed it down to these two and cant decide on which one to get. I know the biggest and main difference is the opperating system. I dont know the differences between the two but i will be using this thing mostly for music, movies, games, internet, and messaging.

I prefer Windows Mobile devices although I have not used any of the newer Palms all that much.

I have both.

X51v is the shit. The T|X blows.

You may also want to look at the HP iPaqs. I have had an x51v for about a month and am very disappointed with it. In particular, the bluetooth stack is terrible. It also suffers from a frequent "white screen of death" triggered by activesync, which many have a work around for, but it doesn't work on all (mine of course being one of them). The x51v has some awesome hardware, but the Dell ROMs leave something to be desired. I wish I would have either goten a refurb x50v (WM2003) or an iPaq instead. Asus also makes one (MyPal), but I never really did much research on it. If you won't be using bluetooth, or the work around for the WSOD works on your unit, you will be ecstatic with it. If you plan to use bluetooth and/or the WSOD "fix" doesn't work, you will feel like chunking it out the window.

but it seems to me like the 299 iPaq has less for around the same amount of money as the x51

Disappointing to hear of the X51v BT problems, it seems to have quite a few WM5 issues...I have an X50V which I picked up just before the X51V's came out, my X50V is running an active BT connection almost constantly, no problem at all. On the other hand, it has all the PPC2003SE downsides, given the power it has the device is surprisingly slow and unresponsive.

Might want to try the latest Activesync. I have the X51V and just got a replacement (because the original suffered some scratches from a rhino metal case that, contrary to dell's claim, didn't fit with the extended battery). So, that also means my old (and perfectly fine except a couple small scratches on the case) X51V will probably be in the dell outlet soon. They're supposed to pick it up today to bring it back. It'll be the fully loaded X51V with a normal and extended battery and the USB dock. Assuming they keep it as a package.
For the original thread question, I'd personally stick with the Axim because it runs WM5 and includes Outlook, Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

WM5 (or at least Dells ROMs of WM5) is all the more reason NOT to get an x51v right now. Check out aximsite.com for all the WM5 headaches on these devices right now before making your decision. If you want an Axim that will be flawless now, you will be much better served with the x50 line. I am sure they wil eventually get the x51v problems and shortcomings straightened out, but for now, an iPaq is a much better WM5 choice for stability/functionality.

actually I have been to that site and it seems like just a bunch of people that don't really know what they're doing. just another reason why a license should be required prior to purchasing any kind of computer.. but that's just me.
I've also read plenty of problems with pretty much everything else I own and yet I have no problems, so that's how I've come to my conclusion...

Yeah it's about like any computer site. It has it's fair share of clueless members. It is definately the foremost Axim forum though.

True true, very true. I'm disappointed by the lack of PDA software and information. I think they're great, but you really don't see them around anywhere.
I'd really love to find a free handwriting recognition program like Calligrapher. I just can't see spending $30 for something like that. I guess it's because PDA's are so small. $50 for a video game doesn't sound bad, but the desktop or laptop is so much bigger. strange logic I guess...
