I hear a lot of people putting down norton as far as a virus scan and firewall. My 90 day subscription just ran up.

1. Should i renew it? or should i download AVG from downloads.com or a different virus scanner?

2. What do u guys think of Zone alarm firewall secutiry? free firewall at Downloads.com

3. If i should delete norton, whats the website i go to, to have it COMPLETELY removed from my computer.

Thanks in advance

I had been waiting to see more posts here, but things seem to be slow today. I am prepared to be flamed for this. 7 laptops and 5 desktops all running Norton and never had any real problems. I run ad-aware as well, because norton doesn't catch everything. Yes, Norton is a resource hog, but the 3dmark05 score in my sig was achieved with the full set of Norton programs running in the background.
Flame away guys.

Just reinstall it. I found this out a while ago. When your subscription runs out and they tell you to renew it (i.e. fork over the credit card number), just unstill any norton product and reinstall it. You will get a brand new subscription which expires 1 year from the date of the new install.

^ Not with his 90 day trial version he won't.

AVG (anti-virus-gaurd) I think, is the best free av download. It dosen't hang your system up with all sorts of running services in back ground. It covers pretty much everything you'd need, and updates almost twice a day! Super fast too. I hope that helps bro.

After nine years of Norton, Dumped their Firewall half way through the subscription and liked the Free ZoneAlarm so much better, that I have now switched to a free antivirus as well.

AntiVir had the best review on this report, including Free and Paid versions:

In addition to the above, also have several free anti and block spyware utilities:

Spyware Blaster (the best block)

Spybot Search & Destroy (scan & block)

AdAware (scan only)

Norton Internet Security has served me well since 2002. I think it's the best package for the money. Its updated often enough, and seems to do what it's supposed to. I can't speak for other companies, but Norton has been fine for me.

That's only if you re-format. I too use Norton Internet Security with no problems at all. I use Ad-Aware and Spybot so I'm sure I don't miss anything. No problems here.

If you wan't to go with a paid antivirus, get Kaspersky Antivirus. It's got the best virus detection rate from any virus scanner. And its nowhere near the resource hog that Norton was

AVG is the way to go. Free and low on resources. Updates by itself also.

I've never had to reformat.

Anti-Vir or AVG, both seem pretty good any opinions.

thanks,
I have/had Norton SystemWorks with additions like WinFax Pro and other utilities
(paid for) that I did not want to lose.

I just went to Control Panel; Add/Remove and selected "Modify" -
this allowed me to just remove Norton AntiVirus.

The Symantec cleaner tool would have removed everything.

Love the AntiVir so far, clean & fast will report later if I ever see a problem.

Both AntiVir and AVG will flag a False Positive on the Panda Scanner file:
imscan.dll (in win\sys32\activescan\)
no idea what it was doin ther, just moved it to a floppy in case it is ever needed.

If you use Norton 'speed disc' "analyze" (usually takes a few seconds) with AntiVir active,
it takes over an hour, as it checks each file.

A normal AntiVir System Scan just takes 1 to 5 minutes on the D800
(but :58 minutes on the old Latitude LM running Win98).

Have used every version of Norton down through the ages. Have had my machine working (work) while others crashed around me. So yes I recommend renew subscription, because it's a cheap security that works well.

isnt that the point though? to remove everything norton has on my computer? becuase if i just removed the anti virus. then i still have other things on my computer that are HOGGING up my machine or slowing it down? so shouldnt i remove everything?

I agree, Norton has been a great product for me as well, there are those in the forums however that spend countless hours overclocking, undervolting and eliminating as many running processes as possible, some of these folks I wonder do they see the forest? or just the bark in their face?
You cant go wrong with Norton, but some people will go nuts if they cant save a few processes here and there. Free programs that use less processes I would imagine dont do ALL of the things that such programs like Norton or McAfee do hence they dont need as many processes. I would say do your homework before trusting your files to free anti viral programs. Some of the folks who cant stand have an extra process running are the same folks who live on the edge by squeezing every last bit of performance out of their systems to the brink of frying their computers with too much tweaking.
To each his own.
