There would be no doubt about the validity of your position.
It is also said by many experts that a Format C:\ and reinstall, at least every year will keep your system at its peak.
It is all according to your priorities, I choose to allow software that 'slows' my system, but my system is still much faster than I 'need'.
When I want to send or receive a FAX, WinFAX Pro does the best job for me, (it is now a Norton Product) but I do prevent it from loading,
until I want to use it. ***
GoBack (I started with the Roxio version) looks like it must cause some slowing, since it needs to keep 'track' of everything that is done.
I have disabled the WinXP's "System Restore" (also a drag on the system) as it would not always succeed,
but GoBack has NEVER Failed.
PartitionMagic was handy when my Sony VAIO needed its partitons managed, like most utilities,
it worked better as a PowerQuest Product than Norton.
CleanSweep, I liked QuarterDeck's better, but was pleased that Norton provided the patch for me to keep it after a Win95/Win98 upgrade,
very little need for it now, again it can be set to load, or not. CP; A/R has improved and CS is handy to store a 'backup' of some Programs.

UpDate on the 'Free' AntiVir: It is super fast, does a "Full-Scan" QUICKLY, (never looks at files 'in-use'

)
but it is said
{castlecops.com} not to worry about that.
Dr Peter Norton would spend three hours scanning three million files, never found a problem, now it is three minutes or less

NAV would put up at least one note a week about blocking a Trojan trying to enter my MS Messenger which was long ago removed.
A Kaspersky OnLine Scan should find anything AntiVir might miss, if so, I will report that.
AntiVir has just released a new version (still free) but, as with ZoneAlarm, I resist upgrades to Programs that are working so well already.

edit:-*** An excellent little utility to help keep installs from adding unwanted "StartUps" is this:
StartupMonitor is a small utility that runs transparently (it doesn't even use a tray icon)
and notifies you when any program registers itself to run at system startup.
It prevents those utterly useless tray applications from registering themselves behind your back,
and it acts as a security tool against trojans like BackOrifice or Netbus.
