Actually, there are many more scenarios than that. Specifications are definitely not hard and fast, release dates move due to manufacturing capabilities and timelines, management decisions change on when to release due to both inside and outside factors, dependence on outside companies for various interior parts (you all know how fun it is to rely on ati or nvidia to have enough parts in the supply chain), not to mention competition as Unleaded said and the desire not to kill sales of current models.
