Well, before i spend my life savings on that meal (lol), i have another question. I am into web designing and graphics and all that good stuff. Should i spring for the 333Mhz 1 GB now instead of the 266Mhz 512 MBs? Or should I get the 512 and then upgrade with another 512 MB stick if i feel the need for it later on? Would I notice much of a performance boost between the 266 and 333? I have 256 Megs of 333mhz in my desktop right now and it runs alright, but lags in photoshop and dreamweaver , as well as some other programs at times.

Thanks.

P.S. I work at best buy so I can get memory somewhat cheap with my discount, especially with some of the rebates they run.

I'd advise you to go with 512 DDR333 and upgrade later if you feel the need; it makes more economic sense that way.

This also depends on if it is cheaper to get that stick of 512 from ABS rather than BestBuy. I have no idea how much discount you'd be getting.

I would do that too...if ABS offered a 512MB of 333 Mhz memory.

But they don't. They offer one stick of 512MB, 266 Mhz memory, or two sticks of 512MB of 333 Mhz memory. There's no middle ground.

That's what I had to do, BTW. I did the 512MB of 266Mhz memory b/c I already bought a stick of 512MB of 333Mhz RAM earlier and I didn't want have to deal w/ the hassle of selling what I had. It still runs things fine, though.

As for the RAM, I'd do the 1GB of RAM now, since you don't have to worry about any compatibility problems, which is <ahem> what seems to be happening w/ my aftermarket stick. For graphics, more RAM is definitely better.

Datheron,

Just because they dont offer it in the online configurator doesn't mean they wont sell it to you. Give them a call and ask. If they say no, then mention iBuyPower.com will do it but you'd like to give ABS a shot because you've bought from ABS in the past. If they still say no thank them and hang up.

True. When I ordered my zForce F2, I *did* ask for whether a single 512MB 333Mhz RAM stick was available; the guy replied that they only came in pairs, so no. I guess I'm not one to pressure salespeople...

The interesting part, though, is that my system shipped w/ ONE 256MB of RAM. Not only is it a bad configuration, but it's definitely not listed on their site.

On another note - I've been trying to get my 512MB of 266Mhz to work w/ my Geil 512MB 333Mhz. As much as I'd like to say the system runs stably, it freezes up a lot on me, even having the stick as a standalone. As anybody else tried inserting aftermarket RAM into their systems?

Sorry Datheron, I did not realize you already ordered. I did call ABS as well and they weren't very helpful so I ended up ordering from internetishop. I asked em about the 333 ram and they said no. I asked em about the 7200rpm HD and they said no. I asked em if they gave the full CD version of the OS and they said no. It didn't take em long to offer the 333ram and the 7200rpm hd, not sure if they give the CD of the OS yet.

About the ram... you might want to visit Crucial for ram that works with your current stuff. The site also gives some good info about how ram works and what to look for.

I was planning on calling in my order because I wanted to take advantage of the student discount (and I am ACTUALLY a student..). So maybe after that, upgrading to the 1 gig wont seem so bad. Plus I have some extra cash coming to me next week so I could put that towards the upgrade as well. Thanks.

Edit: I also live in New Jersey so I have to pay the extra tax. Even though its only 6 dollars, the tax is already about 100 with the configured system I have.

Hey edd0e, what's this student discount you're talkin' of? ABS gives student discounts? and if so, how much? Thanx!

I think the zForce F2 is best for winter, especially if u use a mouse. While playing some game that requires a mouse, like some fps or rts, the fan blow air out the right side so its like a lil personal heater. Whether it is good or bad depends on the climate you live in.

My friend's F2 had a lil problem, I think it was because of some drivers, that his fan stopped running, but it fixed itself after he reinstalled WinXP. But just on the safe side he called ABS and they have arranged for a free fedex pickup so it can be sent to em for a check den sent back, all for free, and he only went for the original warranty, no extra 2NET ones. I think that means pretty good service.

For those who might be interested, internetishop now appears to be selling the 1557 with SXGA (1280x1024) with a 15.1" display.

suprgonzo,

somewhere earlier in this thread someone talked about the student discount. Im not sure how much it is. One person said 30 then another said 50. It depends on what your buying and who you are talking to i guess.

dej,
I was looking to purchase from internetishop, but then i saw that their parent company was also into finding homes for pets. This sort of discouraged me from buying from them. Also, their rating on resellerratings.com wasnt too great compared to abs.

Any Non-California Dealers?

Hey Everyone,

I've been reading the posts here on the AOpen 1557's and would like to score one for myself. But, InternetIShop, ABS and iBuyPower are located here in California and charge sales tax. Are there any dealers outside of CA that I can turn to? BassComputers wants me to jump through hoops to buy from them and their prices aren't all that great. I can qualify to use them as I work for a company that has a reseller number, but I'm not sure I want the hassle of submitting paperwork and filling out forms just to save on sales tax which I would already save on buying from an out-of-state company.

Let me know!

TIA,

nobbie

Why a NJ sales Tax?

Does ABS have an office in NJ, or did my f#$&%@# state pass an internet sales tax law? I was so happy with ABS' pricing... until I configured it for shipping and noticed an NJ sales tax . Can someone help me comprehend this?
