BTW, Devast, how much of a student discount did ABS give you?
I priced the exact system I paid 1749 for, and it came out to 1779... just $30 bux i guess, but better than nothing.

855PM Product Chipset

If you go to the above link, on the right you'll see a Product Information section. The update to 333 is the second bullet. Theres a way to tell also, in Sandra 2004 under your CPU & Bios Info.. check your Stepping Mask. If it says B1 then you have the updated chipset.

I happen to have a sandra 2004 report from one of these abs machines (thanks to another forum member)- it says Stepping Mask B1- he has a PM 1.7-

Awesomeness. As per your suggestion, I called in today, and ordered a rather minimal system (my budget's tight) for $1703 or so. Asked him about getting it done quick, and he threw in a free rushed service ($25). Asked about the student discount, and he said he'd knock off $50.

Now the only thing that worries me is that they haven't sent an e-mail confirmation, which he said should have taken no more than 20-30 minutes. Then again, it looks like my Hotmail account was acting up, and I *did* call in at around 5:15 p.m. when they closed at 5:30 p.m. Cutting it close, I know. Hopefully, I'll get everything straightened out by Monday.

Good deal, I didn't get the rushed service but the regular service doesn't seem too bad. Got my tracking # and estimated time of delivery from fedex is the 20th and I just ordered on the 13th. Exactly a week, which I guess would have been sooner if this Monday wasn't a holiday. Most companies at best can only get you a ship date in a week. Only downside to the whole shipping thing is that they only use FEDEX which is IMHO the absolute worst service. Last 3 packages that was sent to me got screwed up: 1 went to a different address that they later found, another went to a building a block away, no idea why, and the last was completely lost. Anyway, ABS, if you read these forums, give us alternate carriers, or at least the option to hold it at a station, those fedex drivers give it to anyone that remotely resembles a human and can sign a name.

Hey, if you read my nickname you'd probably recognize it from the abs forum, yea I'm the guy that was begging for DDR333 rams to be available. Well, anways, I ordered mine on wednesday, and according to them its still on step 4 of 8.

I'm just asking those who have been using notebooks based on the Aopen 1557G whether heating is at all an issue. Cause I'd like to decide whether to buy one of those Antec or Vantec notebook coolers from newegg.com before the notebook actually arrives.

I'll be posting my own review, once I've gotten it and hav had a chance to try it out.

the fourth horseman, as in the three horsemen of the apoclypse?

Question. Did you get a confirmation e-mail 15-20 minutes after you placed your order? I didn't, and I haven't been able to reach ABS on the account that it's a long weekend. I called in around ~5:10 when they close at 5:30 p.m., and the guy did say that such an e-mail would come, but it sounds weird that they'd not send it out till Tues. morning (i.e. 5:20 + 20 minutes = 5:40 = 8:10 Tues. morning?!).

I just want conf., dammit!

dfourthhorseman, I havent had any heat issues yet. I've been running some of the benchmark programs to make sure my results are consistant. All the benchmarks have been consistant so far except 3dmark2001se, which seems to give wildly different results everytime I run it. I've played Q3A and BF1942, so far so good.
If I were to buy anything it would be a good set of external speakers or headphones.

Well I've been using dfourthhorseman as a nickname for so long dat I forgot y. I know its wierd using Kenshin from that anime show but this forum seems to only accept 3 kb pics, even when its being hosted elsewhere.

Well even though you say its not a problem, I'm sure it gets pretty hot after like 6 hrs of usage (switching between reading texts, watching avi videos, and playing some nfs undergrounds, just for examples), rite? So I'm thinking its not exactly a bad investment for extending the life of your laptop rite? The Antec one only drains about 20 mins of battery life after a full charge and it cools quite a bit.

Which also reminds me, does anyone know what kind of battery the 1557G uses? I'd like to have some online stores bookmarked for buying one. I've found several sites with this item: "A-OPEN 1555/1557 BACKUP LI+ BATTERY"
http://www.pathwayexpress.com/itemvi...=AOPPM1555BATT

I hope I get my F2 soon.

The guy actually sent me a quote in PDF format before I ordered, and after I don't really remember if I got a confirmation letter. Mostly I've been checking status on the ABS site. If you need proof that your order existed at all... go to ABSPC.com, click on order status, enter the email you gave, and for the password type in the last 4 digits of your phone number. It should tell you all the details of your order.... according to mine, fedex says I'll have it on TUESDAY!!!!! wooohoooo!

Well even though you're sure it is a problem, I stick with what I said earlier. Although I've not played a game for 6 hours, I can say the notebook is capable of handling games like Q3A and BF1942 for at least 2 hours without overheating or getting HOT. By that I mean I can put my hand on the memory bay or the CPU area and not have to pull it away. The Antec cannot hurt, but I think I'd get the notebook first and evaluate it.

Are the video cards on these upgradeable down the road? And does anyone have a guess as to what type of performance increase we would see by upgrading a 1.6 banias with a 2.0 dothan when they come out?
Almost all notebooks have non-upgradable mainboard and video card. Even if these were upgradable, it would be futile to attempt that. Next generation notebook components usually employ entirely different designs that cannot be used with last generation upgradable components. (Right now, no matter what you buy, it will not be compatible with the upcoming PCI Express based products.)

Well current centrino has 150% the performance of a P4 of the same clock speed by doubling the L2 Cache from 512kb to 1mb, dolthan doubles it again to 2mb. So from a guess I'd say "clockspeed x 1.5 x 1.5 = clockspeed in P4". So a 2.0 Ghz current centrino would be about 3.0 ghz P4, and a 2.0 Ghz Dolthan would be about 4.5 Ghz P4. But obviously this is really a lot of guesswork, it could be a lot more or less. But I guarantee it'll help people multitask like crazy, especially when new chipsets start supporting 8x AGP and DDR400 Ram. But that's all in the future. Right now, I just want to get my laptop as soon as possible and maybe hope that it supports upgrading to dolthan when it becomes cheap.

Keep in mind that Dothan is not meant to stand alone in the revolution. (Drive him fast to his tomb. This, from Jacques.) With PCI Express, the graphics bus will experience great speed gains. DDR-II memory will increase memory bandwidth. Those, combined with Dothan's 2mb cache, will sufficiently double the performance of current P4 based systems, to say at the least. The Dothan will not save power, even though it is a 90nm chip, due to its massive amounts of transistors. But it will reduce heat output.

Power in = heat out. The latest information I have seen indicates that the Dothan CPUs will not only consume more power but also produce more heat than current Pentium Ms.

it is at moments like this that I wished I learned more about farads, coulombs, Ohms, voltages, and amperes. What was that equation again...h(joules) = I^2Rt or something. Now by adding more transistors, is that more or less impedence...By lowering the voltage, that should reduce the current, which should reduce heat...this is seriously hurting my head.

Speaking as an engineer, it seems you are making things more complicated than they need to be. Just remember that energy in = energy out. From a thermodynamic point of view, you can think of a CPU as a device for converting electrical energy into heat energy.
If energy in = energy out, then indeed the Dothan should produce less heat as well as consume less energy, since it lowers the voltage requirement. With everything else constant, lowered voltage = lowered current.
