1557G Notebook Review. - Page 5

The power consumed per transistor will indeed be lower, but there will be a lot more transistors due to the doubling of the cache. Also, Intel has been having a real problem with leakage in their 90 nm process which means more energy wasted (converted into heat without performing any useful work).

Hey guys..... it appears there is another variant of the 1557, aside from the 1557G and 1557GL that we've been looking at, there also appears to be a 1557A...

Not sure if its a newer or older variant, but it has sxga+, and from the pics doesn't appear to have the cd control panel up top, also appears to be missing the cursor thing the G/GL has under the mouse, but it looks like it has a glossy screen?!??! maybe its just a promo image?

Are the video cards on these upgradeable down the road?
Video might be upgradeable since I've seen reviews of the exact same machine as the 1557 with an intel extreme graphics chip..... but maybe its entirely different motherboard with the exact same layout, made to fit in the exact same chassis...

Well all the variant of 1557 can't be too different, they only have one page for drivers:

So I'd say its more of a cosmetic change, maybe different display too, but that's probably about it. What's the difference between 1557G and GL btw? I must have missed that.

My notebook just got to step 7 of 8, hope it gets to me by friday so I play with it over the weekend.

Finally I know something that devast does not. No offense though. Video cards on the 1557G/A are not upgradable. They are proprietary components made to fit a specific board. The variants with the integrated graphics use an entirely differently chipset, namely the Intel 855GM that has graphics in the north bridge. Those with external graphics use the 855PM. The 1557A has been available as long as the 1557G. It's mostly outer appearance. The only thing it lacks is the Super DJ function and a two way scroller instead of a four way.

1557 G & GL appear to be basically the same except for the sxga+ screen on the GL.
it seems the intel integrated graphics version of the 1557 is really 1556 at the Aopen site, also the 1557A has a SPDIF interface unlike the G/GL.

for those who are interested, i've updated the pics with ones that are actually in focus.
Dej, still having those focusing problems, I see? Try lowering the aperture and the shutter speed to increase the range of the focal plane.

A photographer I am not. My biggest problem is I keep moving while the shutter is open. Taking the indoor shots without flash means long exposure time. These are much better than the ones I had earlier though. They may still be in your buffer so make sure you hit refresh when you view em. Also take note of pic 4, kinda shows the size of the speaker openings.

Not sure if you were involved with the discussion on the Cyberpower S4's but my guess is the S4 might very well be a 1557A.

GOT MY 1557!!!! teeee heeee.... will post a full review soon after I install all my software.... which is ALOT!.... first impressions... this is definately a workhorse laptop. No fancy stuff at all... The power button doesn't even light up like all the other laptops, the only lights on it are the indicators along the screen, one by the cdrom, and a led in the headphone jack to help you find it. The build quality is very solid. It's about the same build quality as my room mate's 505xl, and in one of the benchmark utilities wistron showed up... Only quality issues I have right away is the left mouse button and the latch. Both feel a little flimsy, at first, but maybe just used to my old laptop. Anyway... here's the benchmarks:

aquamark 3
gfx 2586
cpu 7311
total 21982

3dmark2003
2609

pcmark 2002
cpu 4968
mem 4881
hdd 804

setup: 1.6pm , 9600/64m, 1gig 333, 80gig 5400

BTW... sisoft says 333 is @ 333

Anyway... more to come soon.... BTW... if any of you do graphic/ web design/ 3d definately do not get less than a sxga+ on a 15"... the 1440x1050 on a lcd is clearer than 1280x1024 on my 19"crt...
BTW... Benchmarks are with factory settings/drivers... only thing changed is a windows update, all critical and direct x.

Congrats devast and nice benchies! Look forward to reading your review.

Hey devast, plz run some id utlities and give us the timings for the DDR333 memory. Did you buy ABS or some other company?
Oops- they are now out of stock of the b/g wireless card...I guess I waited a bit too long to order...

I was wondering how you got such nice benchies and I think I've figured it out. I modified the OpenGL and Direct3D settings (in my display properties) completely to performance and I get similar results... aquamark3: 21777, 3dmark03: 2595.

I'm wondering, did u guys buy the 3 year warranty? Do u guys think it is a good idea to get it for such a beastly machine?

I just got the standard 1 year warranty. I've heard with notebooks its a good idea to get as much warranty as you can get, but I generally have bad experiences with 'customer service'. For the most part I'd say its usually worth the extra invenstment. Especially if your considering a barebones unit like the G1 or F2 from a smaller reseller like ABS.

BTW, I'm not sure I'd classify the 1557G as a 'beastly' machine. Its a decent Pentium-M + M10 combo. The beastly machines are the desktop replacements like the Sager 5680s, 4080s, 4780s, Fujitsu 5010s, ect... Those are currently the battleships of notebooks. The Pentium-Ms are the frigates or destroyers (performance speaking).

I got one year standard too. I mean I believe if a notebook survives one year, it should be basically free of defects and such. I'm more likely to lose it, break it accidentally, or have it stolen than anything else afterwards. I have a surge protector designed for notebooks so that's covered, only thing I might be worried about is parts wearing themselves out due to overheating, so I bought a Antec notebook cooler, a nice lil investment I believe. You have to understand warranties are pretty specific, some companies are a lot more serious than others. For example if you spilled some coffee on your keyboards and the notebook broke and you cleaned as best as you can, it all depends on whether you can fool the ppl repairin the thing.

dfourthhorseman, yours should be coming soon right?
Oh yeah, tomorrow if fedex doesn't mess up (may God have mercy on them cause I won't). I already got my home WAN set up, got all the benchmark programs ready, I just need to wait for it to come. Mine friend is getting exact same thing and arriving same day as mine. I'll post my review of it as soon as I finish with everything (reinstalling O/S, patches, softwares), and I'll forward my friend's opinion of it too. When I get the Antec notebook cooler on friday I'll give my opinion of how well it works with the F2.
