I think that it probably really works, you just can't hear it very well. I tried mine and I have to put my ear right up to the speaker and rub the mic port, making sure that the volume to it was turned up all the way and mute off.

Another way to test would be to open up the Realtek sound manager in the start/ programs menue, AVrack. Click on the little 1/8" plug on the recorder area, then select the mic, make sure you turn it up. Now record a segment, and play it back. If this doesn't work you got problems and need to get it fixed...

Windows usually has the mic set on mute. First make sure you have the little speaker icon in your taskbar and double click that. Once it opens the window with all the different sound adjustment settings make sure your Mic is not set to mute.

My mic works fine but I hardly use it ever. :P

Try a Realtec AC'97 Audio fix.

This R/R solved my Mic. problem + I haven't had a BSOD in 24 hrs (only had one tonite -- due to a Nero Rack RPC?!)

There's an extensive bunch of threads relating to Mics and how to get them working. There is a trouble-shooting routine built-in. I think its in Sounds in Control Panel. Try that.

Also, on the Volume Control Dialog make sure Mic is selected and not muted and the volume is up. Make sure you do both Playback and Record. Also pick advanced in both and select Loudness and Mic Boost but make sure Mic 2 is off. Finally, mute the SP/DIV in both, that cut a lot of the background noise on mine. Oh, yeah, try twisting the mike plug a bit, I find that helps too. Lastly, make sure in BIOS or whatever, you haven't selected SP/DIV, I think (don't know for sure) that turns off the usual functions for those plugs.

Like I said, do a search on Mic and similar subjects, you'll get a lot to try.
