Dumb Question

How would I tell the difference between an AGP Vid Card, PCi, and PCI-E Just by looking at them? I have a Nvidia FX 5200 and want to get the 7800, but I dont know what kind of interface my 5200 uses. thanks for any help.

(this is in a desktop computer)

You've probably got AGP. I think the 5200 was never made in PCI-Express format. You might be out of luck looking for a 7800 with an AGP interface, because I think they're all made for PCI-Express. But there are definitely some AGP 6800s and X850s, and those are pretty decent performers.

Only way to tell is by the connector on the bottem
Agp card

PCI-E Are a little bit longer than agp cards, and have this on the end

PCI cards are just like the PCI-E cards, but are only meant for PCI slots. They still make them, but people dont seem to use them anymore.

PCI cards are still common for other (non-graphics) uses, such as hardware controllers, sound cards etc. etc.

I can confirm that the FX-series is agp only. the 7800 is pci-e only. I was in the same dillema, i had a fx 5950. Upgraded to an X850 (AGP). Its a great card (cost me $280 @ local compusa). Nearly full AA and full resolution on all games.

Well, being that the visitors of this forum are from all over the world, it should be noted that some parts (such as video cards) have different "designs" that are geared towards specific markets. For instance, a lot of components found in Europe, Japan, Taiwan, etc.. are not found in the US.

Willalbert, what Woody06 posted is probably the best way to reference a card visually. To find if a card has a AGP/PCI-E/PCI, your best bet is to go to that manufacturer's website and there you will find what flavor the card is sold in.

If you're talking about the 7800GS, I've heard it's nowhere near the speed of the 7800GT...somewhere around the performance of a 6800GS or GT...so you may as well save yourself some money and get yourself a 6800GT
