C600 keyboard issue - replace motherboard or keyboard?

I have an Inspiron C600 on which I am running Windows XP. All has been fine for some time, and then suddenly I found that there was an issue with the keyboard, or perhaps with how it was communicating with the computer.

Some letters work correctly, such as a s d and f, but others do not funtion properly. For instance, when I type 'h' I get 'hyu' and when I type 'g' I get 'gtr' if it is a new sentence and 'gt' if it is part of a sentece. Other letter keys are functioning as tab, page down, cats and dogs living togehter...total chaos.

If I connect an external keyboard it works fine, so I assuming that is not a language setting or something to that effect (bear with me, I am only mildly computer literate). I did a clean install of XP hoping it was the drivers, but nothing has changed. I found no change in response with heavy or light pressing of the keyboard, and I removed and cleaned the keyboard without any effect.

My question: Is this likely a keyboard issue or a motherboard issue? Or neither? I am looking to buy a replacement part on Ebay.

Thanks for any insight you might have!

When you say you removed the keyboard to clean it did you remove the cable that attaches to the motherboard also? You may have a damaged keyboard but the only way to know for sure s to get a replacement keyboard otherwise deal with an external one. I reccomend getting it thru dell spare parts since its relatively a cheap part out of warranty to replace over getting it thru ebay.

Thanks for chiming in. Yes, I removed the keyboard completely, blew off the connections, and reconnected without any impact on performance. The external keyboard keeps me running, but it sort of defeats the puropse of running a laptop. If there are no other ideas I will look into the keyboards at Dell and keep my fingers crossed that it solves my problem.

For the sake of completeness (in case this comes up in a future search)...

It was the keyboard. I replaced the keyboard and restarted to a fully functional computer.

How long did your keyboard work after you replaced it? I had a similar problem that seems to come back within a month of keyboard replacement (now on the third KB replacement).
