No exact date.

I just sent an email to ltcom.com...they have the am5100/g551 for I think the lowest price I've seen $795 (barebones)...

To order from LTcom.com, don't you have to be a reseller and become one of their registered customers?

I think you're right. Plus they never responded to my email.

Looks like it'll be accupc for me.

I will pursue becoming "Registered Customer" at LT.com and and let you know how it goes.

fwiw, I tried the png on the Quanta Z500 at 32 bit and didn't get the smaller squares. I'm not a graphics guru, but I think devast might be right regarding the validity of the test.

The graph cannot decipher a 18-bit dithering display from a true 24-bit display. I guess that says a lot about the quality of the dithering technology. But it can easily tell a 16/18-bit display from a 24-bit display.

ecs g556 LCD impressions

I've been researching what LCD is used in the g556, and in doing so came across a number of posts on the subject on the voodoo pc message board (voodoo has relseased this model under the 460m name as mentioned before)

.verdict is good for gaming, as it has 25ms response time, but not nearly as good as fujitsu/sony/toshiba, or other newer or MVA tech panels for non gaming activites...

http://www.voodoopc.com/boards/mess...4706&forum=1026

additionally, where did you find definitive mention of this panel being a true 32 lcd? I found the specs for the panel used in the g551, and the 1400*1050 panel was listed at 18 bit I believe, trying to find the link, will post when i do.

edit: found the link, this site has an extensive listing of the specs of panels used in notebooks...

Well, it's been 3 business days now and still no follow up by LT.com. So , fwiw, this doesn't look like a very promising company to try and do business with. The inquiry was for a business account, so one would think they would have been at least minimally motivated to get back with me. I'm now on to other things, so LT.com, you snooze, you loose;-\

I think Voodoo is still the only company with this (Envy m460)

I'm pursuing alternate avenues. Stay tuned...

Hmmm... I was trying to find distributor for these today and after a few transfers got a hold of a repair guy who informed me he was repairing ECS stuff all the time. Gave me the impression they were having some major quality control issues with numerous componenets.... Stranger than fiction, or what??

See my post about the Winstron. They're pretty reputable ODM, no?? It's looking pretty nice to me and available now. A different distributor told me today another 2 months for Dothan.

That is the AOpen 1557G, but it is made by Wistron...it had been available for months...maybe it is a variant? How do you know that it is a new Wistron?
The distributor informed me thusly. They've reportedly had it available for last 3 weeks or so and been selling quite a few. Price is a bit more a attractive than the Asus M6000N, and it's a bit more compact. I've read review of the AOpen somewhere before, but can you give me your quick take.

Also, regarding the G556, I'm taking it with a grain of salt yet, but the guy I was talking to today was pretty cautionary about the ECS notebooks. What's the scoop from the Voodoo crowd about the reliability?? I haven't heard any major complaints, so was a bit taken back by his remarks.

I am beginning to think that Voodoo has direct links to the factory that makes the G556, which makes their variant a bit different from ECS'. For instance, Voodoo now has the M10 Pro Turbo while the G556 is just the Pro. But then again it is very easy to OC the PRo to become the Pro Turbo. But they do have subtle differences. The Voodoo version has a flat lid, while the G556 has a circular groove in the middle of the lid for OEMs to put their labels.

I don't think the Asus M6 and the Wistron/AOpen 1557G are exactly what I wanted. It seems the G556 is out of the picture. Syntax USA have dropped the AM5600 from their website. (What happened there?) I guess I will wait for a while.
Yeah, neither are exactly what I want either, and the G556 looks sweet, but more and more looking like to be just so much vapor and I need to give up on the perfect machine and move on something. The Voodoo version is too pricey for me and none of the distributors listed under ECS's "Where to Buy" links seem to know ANYTHING about the G556. It's like my inquiry is the first time they've ever heard of it. Same deal when I tried pursuing availability from Syntax. And now you say they've removed it from their site. Maybe Voodoo is "encouraging" them to keep it from general availability so they can keep squeezing out that extra grand??

So now it comes down to vacillating between the M6N and the Wistron. I can get pretty decent prices on either, the Wistron being a bit less. The comments about the Asus 15.1" display issues concern me, but not sure if they apply to the XGA, SXGA+, or both. It'd make it a lot easier if I could get my hands on the darn things, but neither are available retail hereabouts. One minute I prefer one, the next the other.... Guess I am stricken with "analysis paralysis". Suppose I should head down to Gateway Country Store before Monday at least...

I've been following along with this thread.. I was interested in the G556 and after reading this thread I'm conerned.. How would Voodoo have some much pull being a grey market distro in the US to Syntax? How could they get a custom notebook? I'd really like to look further into the G556.. it's just these grey market distros are starting to create a line, they seem to be making a middle between grey market and the dell's in the world.. i mean where did voodoo get their new desktops cases and alienware get their sentia with custom top..?

I couldn't tell you Voodoo's secret, only that I have contacted a few of the distributors listed on ECS's website under "Where to Buy" and none of them seem to know anything about the G556. In fact, none of them appear to even be distributing ECS notebooks. Maybe MB's and such, but not notebooks. I also contacted Syntax, and after being transferred here, there, and everywhere.... got absolutely nowhere!! Last week I called ECS direct and informed them I was interested in reselling their notebooks, specifically the G556, if they could point me to a U.S. distributor. They did provide a number, but when I followed up, the party was pretty confused as to why ECS was referring people to them, and, ironically enough, based upon their experience in notebook repair industry, advised me to stay away from the ECS notebooks.

But maybe I am just a lamer who hasn't asked the right questions, gotten in touch with the correct department, etc. I am not yet 100% ready to throw in the towel. If anybody at ECS who has a clue or two happens to read this post, then please do feel free to follow up with a private post.
