ECS G556 Barebones - Page 3

I'm also curious about this topic, since I ended up ordering a m460 from Voodoo -- although it's pricey, I don't see anything else out there at the moment that matches its specs as a thin & (somewhat) light gaming notebook.

Although the ECS G556 looks just like the Voodoo m460, their dimensions (at least the ones given on the ecsusa website and by voodoo) don't match up exactly. The G556 is listed at 12.83" (W) x 10.16" (D) x 1.00"/1.26" (H - Front/Back); the m460 is listed at 12.99" (W) x 10.74" (D) x 1.1" (H). So I don't know if Voodoo is somehow using a specially customized chassis.

This has got to be a mistake or typo:

Although out of stock, they have the G556 priced lower than the G551

It is either a typo or a scam...

resellerratings have no reviews of this reseller whatsoever, so I am leaning toward scam...

Out of stock. How convenient. I contacted ECS directly at least twice looking for referral to distributor for the G556. I figure they must be vapor, else they would have been able to accomodate my request. Businesses are in business to make money. Not much incentive for them to blow me off if the unit was actually available. Not to mention the distributors listed on their site seemingly out of the loop as well. But then again, maybe I am just a lamer and they could feel my lamer vibes oozing over the wire....

I don't think it's a scam...it's probably just a mistake...after further review, it looks like they are preparing to sell it in the future, but the default values are displaying

My brother got his Asus M6N two days ago. He's running centrino 1.6, Hitachi 7k60 60GB, and 512MB PC 2700. I ran Aquamark benchmark for him. Here's the result:

GFX 2,241
CPU 7,840
Total 19,617

Not sure if those # are low or high. Maybe someone can comment on it? I check those number with the Sager 5680, and his are lower. Of course his laptop isnt a gaming behemoth and doesnt weight ~10lbs.

Internetishop.com has started selling complete systems based on the G551. Maybe this is a good sign...but most likely this means nothing at all.

I don't believe what I am seeing... a British reseller has the ECS G556 with ATI Mobility Radeon 9700! http://www.evesham.com/PCs/Info.asp?...B-48B2EE45595B

Hmm, a PM 1.7, 512MB RAM (2x 256), 80GB HDD (unknown speed/cache) and 128MB Radeon 9700 w/ 15" SXGA LCD for $1,718.11 USD ($1,462.22 without VAT). Almost sounds too good to be true.

Assuming it is legit and not a typo or scam, how much does it cost to ship a laptop over to the states? Prolly $100 to $200 I'm guessing. Even then, what if something went wrong? Shipping would be a bitch. I can't even find anything on their site that says they'll ship to the US. Even if they did, do out-of-Europe purchasers pay VAT?

If anyone does purchase this, I'd definitly be interested in a review. Along with answers to any of my question.

Wow, finally! Hopefully the trend will continue, and there'll be a Canadian reseller sometime soon.

zaphod78, how did you make that conversion? According to eBay's xe.com, the VATless price is much higher than $1,462.22.

£1,190.64 (GBP) = $2,182.56 (USD)

Also, about shipping, it says you have to call them in order to get a quota on non-UK rates.

Anyway, I'm extremely happy something's starting to happen, and hopefully more news will float up in the near future.

Edit: deltawalkerl, how did you know it's a ECS G556, other than by looking at the picture?

Just a little FYI.

If you head on over to Voodoo PC's forums you will find out all you want to know about people's experiences with the m:460 (ECS G556.)

Want the quick version?
Voodoo doesn't sell it anymore.

The good news is, Evesham is definitely legitimate. They have retail stores all over England.

The bad news is, I think they only sell to the UK. Importing fees won't be cheap. The warranty will be voided.

I know it's a G556 for two reasons. The first is obviously the picture. The tell-tale mouse/scroller buttons as well as the unique speaker cover gives it away. The second is that the dimensions match that of the ECS G55x series. Out of that series only the G556 comes close to the specs of this computer (except for the M11).

It's that bad? Damn, now I'm really disappointed... It was so perfect...

Nope...lots of QC problems with the G556...I don't think it's of any high quality at all...

My mistake, I converted from Euros, and not Pounds.

i'm also very interested in a relative flat centrino notebook with ATI M10/11 and SXGA Display.

The G556 seems to be perfect.

I have seen the notebook on cebit, it seemed to have a very nice finish on first look - picture is here:

http://alexsfotos.fotopic.net/p3507274.html

and now a german store is selling it at an awesome price:

on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...ADME:B:SS:DE:1

and they also have a website:

http://www.e-rotec.com/

the only thing that is keeping me back from ordering is the fact that i can't seem to find any opinions or reviews about the notebook or even ECS as a manufacturer. can anyone help me? I just don't want to spend that much money on a product without talking to someone who owns one...

Recently several G556 based notebooks have surfaced in the States. The one reseller I can think of is the Internetishop G556. (Internetishop.com) Several people in these forums have purchased this model. Do a search for G556, and you will find several opinions. Alternatively, you can go to Voodoo forums and search for opinions on the M:460, which is, theoretically, the same computer.

alex - Guitarded and Warrenzhai are our resident G556 owners. Hope you find some info you were looking for here:

yeah sorry that i didn't do a search before posting, the thread you linked was very interesting to read! i think i've pretty much decided on buying the 1.6/80gb model that the german store is offering. i'll wait 2-3 months though because i don't really need the notebook before i go to college, maybe it will get even cheaper *g*
post #60 of 62
I think the Voodoo M460 was slightly different, cause they seemed to have fixed the problems the voodoo had... Though i'm basing this on Warrenzhai and Guitarded not being displeased with their notebook and the many problems with the voodoo haven't really been a big deal to them.
