No boot device available - strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility

Ive got an Inspiron 8200 that's been giving me the "No boot device available - strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility" error upon bootup. At first I assumed the hard drive had gone, but after turning the computer on and off about 50 times I get it to finally bootup. As long as I leave the computer on everything works great, but as soon as I turn it off or restart and then try to boot up again I get the same error and I have to turn the comp on and off 50 times. I've tried taking out the hard drive and dusting it. No luck. Any suggestions? Thanks

A few things. Do you have a USB drive connected to the computer? If you do, it is trying to boot from that drive first. Flash drives can do the same thing. If you have one in the computer, remove it first before trying to boot up.

I'd unplug anyting usb regardless of what kind of device it is. Ive even heard usb mice cause troubles during POST.

no usb devices and comp is set to boot from hard drive first.

IMO, I still think your hard drive is dying. Be sure to save any important files before it totally dies.

On my desktop(4600 in sig), a faulty surge protector fried my power supply during a lightning storm and caused it to send too much power to the hard drive and damaged it to where it would give that message, it wouldnt even spin. tried shaking it during POST(Nothing to lose right?) and still nothing. Thankfully i had a recent backup on all of my stuff, but the fact remains i had to replace the hard drive and the power supply.

tman its interesting you say that because I just ordered a new power adapter for the laptop because the wire was frade on the previous one. You could actually see it sparking sometimes. Perhaps this did something to the harddrive.

the frayed wire is definately your problem, but whether caused by the power supply or not, a message like that means tha hard drive is on it's way out. Time to buy a new one and use the old one as a paperweight.

Edit: I suppose if a power supply was unable to send power to the hard drive then it could also give that message. Get the PSU fixed and backup your data. When mine went, it showed the message and i would restart and it would work fine for a few weeks, then it committed suicide
