9860 Weird "Turn On" Problem HELP! - Page 2

I'm a notebook repair technician, among many other skills my job requires and a computer specialist. After reading this thread, I have a few suggestions.

Most of the time, when you have a problem where the laptop appears to be booting (lights are on, hdd spins up, etc) but you don't have video, this is a video problem logicly. In LCD screens, there is a flourescent backlight that can go bad. To test this, use a flashlight and shine it directly at the screen and you will see the picture. The flashlight similates the backlight enough that you can see the picture. I have replaced many backlights over the years, and it is a cheap part to replace. The problem is, that the bulbs are hard to get ahold of, and the labor is extremely risky. On top of the operation is extremely dangerous, considering the juice that runs through an inverter for these bulbs. Also the culprit is not always the bulbs but also just as often it is the inverter. There is no sure way to test this unless you have spares laying around.

I would suggest using your warrenty to just have the screen and inverter replaced entirely.

Well, the lappy finally made it back from Sager, and everything appears to be working sorta normally. The repair paper that came back with the laptop said that the problem was a broken LCD cable. Makes sense... Also might explain why rocking the screen back and forth would cause the screen to illuminate.

Now for some other problems...

Let me start off by saying that I work in an IT Department for a major University. My arsnel of tools includes jewelers screw drivers among many things, and rubber gloves. The Tech toolboxes at Sager must contain hammers and chisels. Many scratches and dings on the bezel surrounding the screen, that were not there when it was shipped back to them. Also, from the appearance of the screen itself, I can only assume that they ran out of toilet tissue while my system was there.

So the LCD is working properly for now, I can clean the screen, and guess I will have to live with the dings and scratches. But therer is another problem that was not there when it was shipped back.

Now the CPU fans have a very high pitch whine, even on low speed. It is not very loud, but enough so to be very annoying. When I first got it back there was the whine and a rattling noise. Taking things apart and blowing out the ducts and fans eliminated the rattle, but not the whine. Any ideas what else can be done to possibly eliminate this noise?

When it comes time to replace this system with another laptop I will doubt seriously that I will purchase another Sager. While I have been very happy with the performance of the system, and with the time frame of the repairs.
I am not very happy how the system was handled while in their facility, and can only assume that they wear ear plugs when testing the systems after repairs.
