I am about to purchase a laptop/notebook and after much research have narrowed down the options to an Acer 1654WLMi. The 1650 series received very good reviews in different magazines and the 1654 has the better spec that I require.

It is available in the UK for between £749 and £849 (I think that is about US$1,200 to $1,360) but despite the same manufacturer's code LX.A9905.094 being quoted by all retailers the spec varies - the cheapest ones skimp on the HDD (80 Mb as opposed to 100 Mb), quote a much shorter battery life (so presumably use a cheaper battery) and the optical drive is not dual layer.

A couple of retailers have a price and spec to suit my budget and requirements. Links as follows:

It will be used mainly for business (my work can put Microsoft Office and various other things on it under licence), photography, music files and perhaps a bit of video editing in the future. I won't use it for gaming at all so the quality of the graphics card and whether it is integrated or dedicated is probably not an issue.

Any comments on this particular model, its spec, better alternatives for this price etc would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, I'll only be online for a few more hours before the weekend so won't get back to check replies until Monday!
