5720 Game Performance

Thread Starter
I have a 5720-V
Pentium M 2.26 Ghz
2048 MB DDR
Geforce 7800
80GB 7200 RPM HD
and all that jazz...

So I'm playing WoW, and sometimes it's fine, and sometimes i'm getting >10 FPS for a few minutes, it will just take turns, 50+FPS for a few minutes, then >10FPS for a few minutes. I'm playing with everything maxed except AF, anyone know why I'm getting these spells?

Thanks.

Most likely culprit: Lag. Lag causes the game to act funny client side even though the problem is server side. Also, try removing any oddball utilities and programs running in the background. Make sure your addons are up to date. Run anti-spyware, anti-virus programs to make sure your system is clean. I suggest Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware.

I doubt it's a virus or anything of that sort. I got the thing 7 hours ago, and installed all the antivirus and spybot asap. I guess it co could be lag... that just doesnt seem to correlate with when it's happening though.

Try another game, like Quake 4 or Doom 3 or F.E.A.R.

If you get the same choppy, unconsistent performance, then start checking your drivers and GPU/CPU temperatures.

So I wake up this morning, and for some reason when I start up WoW it tells my that "Hardware has changed, do I want to use defaults?" I s.aid no. So now I get 10 fps constantly, all the time, when I started up Mozilla to post this, it dropped to 7. When I use default settings, I get about 14. Damnit what is going on?

Do u have the latest GFX drivers installed? Run some temperature tests while playing and post the CPU and gfx card temps.

Actually, I think the problem this morning was that I was running off the battery. The performance picked up again after I realized I wasn't plugged in. But I still am having the occasional FPS drop problem. How do I run temp tests?

well...I know some people were able to test GFX temps somehow but I dunnow how they did it, if ya wanna check your CPU and HD temps use this:

(OMGlinkOMG)

I mean...it could be that ur cable disconnect...my power cable sometimes falls out and my computer just shuts off on me without a warning......But now I have an alarm set up to run if my battery goes low..........

Rivatuner can show the GPU temp.

I cant figure it out...I mean..I tried but not my best, but that's as hard as I'll try right now. How do you get it to show the GFX temps?

Open Rivatuner

Click on the small arrow just right of the word "customize" in the same line where you can see the name of your GPU. A small line of icons will appear.

the fifth icon is "hardware monitor". Click on it and another window with some graphs will appear. The temp monitor should be there. If it is not, just click on "configure" in that same window and you will be able to choose it.

New issue, guys.

The FPS problem seemed to sort itself out.. it's not happening anymore, but thanks for all the input. Now the problem seems to be with the sound/speakers.
The sound card is whichever one is default for the 5720 (sorry I'm not sure of the name.) What's happening is I'll be gaming and for a few seconds the sound will be fine, meaning loud enough to hear. Then suddenly it will cut out, and it will become so quiet that I struggle to hear it at all. Any ideas what might be causing this?

Which game is doing this, or is it occuring in all games?
When you run games make sure you disable your anti-virus app and other background programs first. This actually helps performance quite alot assuming you are plugged in and there are no hardware malfunctions. Make sure you have the latest appropriate drivers and the games you are running are fully patched as well. If you think it is too hot al the time or is thermal throttling then you may want to look into proper application of thermal compound, appropriate fan operation and that the fan intakes are not being blocked during use. Good luck!

the main problem for my 5720 was the speedstep. when I'am playing powerful games like Battlefield 2 or Doom3. Causes lag and becomes cloppy. your speedstep is causing it lowering your cpu speed when it is need. I provenly suggest use the notebook hardware Control software to boost your CPU when your playing, but you can always set back to a normal parameters. I wouldn't suggest to turn off your speedstep from your bois. It will cause you problems in the long run...

Just set the Windows power mode to 'Always On' rather than 'Laptop' or 'Max Battery'.

This will run your CPU at full power continuously without stepping up/down(assuming you are running on AC not battery).

DO NOT DISABLE SPEEDSTEP IN BIOS, this locks the CPU to the minimum which in your case is 800mhz.

This is an old thread. I actually had the problem described in the original post as well and the culprit was using NVidia drivers other than the ones downloaded from Sager's website. This causes a lot of problems since the drivers released by Sager are designed specifically for this mobile computer and using other drivers may cause these erratic slowdowns in games.

I've never had a problem with speedstep in games although there is a certain MPEG4 codec that I use (came with my Samsung digital video camera) that will not work smoothly unless I use NHC to manually set my CPU to maximum performance while viewing the videos. It is conceivable that this could be a problem in other applications as well but wouldn't cause the kind of slowdowns described in the first post of this thread.
