Service fraud???

I was a happy Toshiba Satellite M30 owner since 2 weeks, when my LCD display failed.

Could use external CRT, but the portable's LCD didn't work anymore, all black, lighted like video signal absence. Somebody in the newgroup told me that it could be the LCD cable.

Brought the notebook to service (Authorized by Toshiba).

One week service, yesterday I've got back the baby. They told me they had to replace the motherboard. They've advised me to reinstall the operating system.... problems could arise due to mobo change.....speed....they've said.

Curiosity drived me to compare Everest's computer report made 2 months ago with the serviced notebook.

Everything is identical.......almost....found a few differences:

2 months ago:
CPU Type: Mobile Intel Pentium M, 1600 MHz (16 x 100)
Motherboard Name: TOSHIBA Satellite M30
BIOS Type: Phoenix (02/13/04)
Video Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 (64 MB)
DMI BIOS Vendor TOSHIBA
DMI BIOS Version Version 1.40
DMI System Manufacturer TOSHIBA
DMI System Product Satellite M30
DMI System Version PSM30E-0SY2K-IT
DMI System Serial Number 34130355P
DMI System UUID 352AB780-36A415CB-8031D953-34130355
DMI Motherboard Manufacturer TOSHIBA
DMI Motherboard Product Portable PC
DMI Motherboard Version Version A0
DMI Motherboard Serial Number $$T043MA7H
DMI Chassis Manufacturer TOSHIBA
DMI Chassis Version Version 1.0
DMI Chassis Serial Number 00000000
DMI Chassis Asset Tag 0000000000
DMI Chassis Type Notebook
DMI Total / Free Memory Sockets 2 / 0

Now:
CPU TypeMobile Intel Pentium M, 600 MHz (6 x 100)
Motherboard NameTOSHIBA Portable PC
BIOS TypePhoenix (10/06/03)
Video AdapterNVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 32M/64M (64 MB)

DMI
DMI BIOS VendorTOSHIBA
DMI BIOS VersionVersion 1.20
DMI System ManufacturerTOSHIBA
DMI System ProductPortable PC
DMI System VersionVersion 1.0
DMI System Serial Number0000000000
DMI Motherboard ManufacturerTOSHIBA
DMI Motherboard ProductPortable PC
DMI Motherboard VersionVersion A0
DMI Motherboard Serial Number$$Y15ZK0MH
DMI Chassis ManufacturerTOSHIBA
DMI Chassis VersionVersion 1.0
DMI Chassis Serial Number00000000
DMI Chassis Asset Tag0000000000
DMI Chassis TypeNotebook
DMI Total / Free Memory Sockets2 / 0

Now, apart from the clock that may need adjustments (600 vs 1600 Mhz!!!), the motherboard looks quite different.... "portable PC": digging around it looks like it is used in tablet pcs. The serial number looks newer. The video card seems different (newer?)

So now I'm asking myself if I've been tricked...if I've been replaced with something compatible, but slower......

Advised many people to buy Toshiba, in the past 10 years. Unsure about present and future.

Will let you know about clock speed, awaitng from you about the mobo considerations.

Regards

Ok, I've read about the 598Mhz clock stuck situation.... any updated hint on how to restore the multiplier from 6x to 16x?

No wonder the fun never turnes on.....my CPU is sleeping.... how to restore the clock to 16x????

Should I call my attourney?

P.S. In the meanwhile I've upgraded the bios to 1.7.... still possible to goback to 1.6Ghz????

LOL, your going to call a lawyer rather than the place that fixed it for help?

They put in what Toshiba sent to them, very possible Toshiba sent something wrong and the shop never noticed it. Also, motherboards change like the wind for laptops, one manufacturer could easily have up to 5 different mobos for one laptop.

Call the shop.

It looks like it is the same mobo use in the tabletpcs. If it has the same performance....
But I've read the same problem here in this forum some other people had troubles to restore the clock back to full speed....

hum....it looks like I'm alone with my problem......

Frequently some parts are interchangeable between lines (makes for less complications in the parts storehouses and cheaper since they on't have to redesign every part in every laptop from the ground up) and as Chad pointed out, the do make changes within a line even while the line is being sold. Portable PC does not necessarily mean tablet. It meas just that, that the board is for a portable PC, which includes BOTH laptops and Tablets as I see it. How does it work? Is everything in order? You mention someting about the clock, the Pentium M changes its speed with respect to load and wether on ac or battery. Are the benchmark values similar to what you had before? Do you notice it to be slower in any way?

And I agree with Chad. I think you should talk to the repair center before calling your lawyer, unless you're gung ho looking for a lawsuit.

There's an evidence that the CPU is running at 600Mhz!

CPU Type Mobile Intel Pentium M, 600 MHz (6 x 100)

Windows media player is struggling to play 1280x720 videos....

I only need the patch and the isnstructions to make a bootable cd and launch the utility that restores the proper clock multiplier (16x).

Help

i think i may have the very same problem, mine is stuck at 600MHz too! I bought it yesterday from someone...i hope he didn't ripp me off

so what can we do?

Wait for a saint that posts the link and instructions to set the multiplier back to 16x

I did try the utility given by Adrjan Rojack at http://www.rojakpot.com/showarticle....tno=177&pgno=0 but it didn't work form (freeze)

I posted a link to Centrino Hardware control in Kenner's other thread yesterday. As I understand it, that and the newer version (Notebook Hardware Control) allow you to set the multipliers (there are several guys in the Dell boards playing with this stuff). Some guys set the multpliers to 6 when on batt and 16 when on AC. I loaded it on my old P3 Tecra (don't have the PM yet) and I could not change them, but that doesn't mean that you guys won't.

the program from rijakpot is useless, since we need to get the multiplayer from 6x to 16x and not raise the FSB frequency, which also raises AGp and PCI.
g00nter, Centrino hardware control didn't help me either

doesn't Toshiba have an e-mail adress? i've search all over the site and i can only find some phone number, but with me beeing in Romania, such a phonecall would cost a lot

blutarsky, have u tried the tutorial from the bottom of the page in this link? http://tabletpcbuzz.com/forum/topic....2&whichpage=26

Try what's in THIS thread. Talks about a Satellite M35 with the same problem. Might be worth a shot.

*edit: I see kenner found a link to a post in the same thread I'm linking to here.

thx g00ner, but the guy with the ISO didn't log-in to notebookforums since August 2005 i think i will try to use that toshiba.rar file...

I had M35s that had a 1.6GHz that were running at 600MHz when I was on battery power (intel speed stepping), the name of the motherboard has nothing to do with it, I am sure they put the right motherboard in. I'd look at all the settings to make sure your CPU is set to run at maximum performance. If that doesn't help, it is possible the board is faulty. Service center replaced your motherboard, not the CPU.
i did some research and it seems the "stuck in 598MHz" happends because the mobo hasn't got the name of the CPU in it's list and he thinks it can only run at the minimum speed, which is 600MHz.

there are a couple of utilities which updates that list but they don't work 100%. I'll be trying them in about half an hour because i have to drive someone home now.

g00nter just got shit-load of rep from me

I've Downloaded Rightmark clock utility and it looks like speedstep was disabled, and I did enabled it and rebooted. Still the same.

The strange thing is that in Toshiba's power utilities even when dealing with maximum performance setting, the CPU power has only 3 steps,...if I recall correctly they should be 5 or 6???
Thanks for the rep, but until you have 100 posts, they don't have any points (just nice comments). Once I relaod (I think in just iunder an hour or so) I'll shoot one your way so keep an eye on your CP.

STOPPPPPPPPPPPP!

It is the responsibility of your service technician to get your machine running tip-top factory spec. Call them and tell them you want your f'n machine fixed.

If you don't hold Toshiba or your service tech responsible for their failings --- no one will. So get on that phone or jump in your momma's car and get the machine down to them to be serviced. And don't pay a dime because it was their responsibility to fix it right the first time.

Report back when you've done this.

mine is surely out of warranty :P
