If you don't hold Toshiba or your service tech responsible for their failings --- no one will. So get on that phone or jump in your momma's car and get the machine down to them to be serviced. And don't pay a dime because it was their responsibility to fix it right the first time.

Report back when you've done this.
For blutarsky's case I couldn't agree more. Kenner's is a bit more complicated since he just bought the machine used. BTW kenner, anyway to check the machine online and see if there's any warranty left in it? Who knows, maybe you'll get lucky and the original owner paid for the extended warranty. I've heard that Tecras always come with 3-year warranties in Australia, maybe the original location it was purchased in has something similar. IIRC you got it in the UK, right?.

Warranty Period: 365 days (Mar 27, 2005)
anyway, thx for the hint!

wtf is wrong with toshiba, why don't they have any kind of customer support? With my 6-year old Dell i could talk on-line with Dell support !! doesn't toshiba have at least an e-mail adress?

Toll-free Technical Support

Computers: (800) 457-7777
PDAs: (800) 949-7993
Projectors: (877) 523-8324

does this toll-free phone number stay toll-free if i call from another country ?

Nope. I called once from Chile and they charged me for it. But they might have a line in your country. Where are you again?

Romania
after searching deep inside toshiba sites i managed to find a service center in my town (Bucharest) and i will go there with my lappy as soon as i can.
What exactly should i tell them? i was thinking of telling them to contact toshiba and ask for the bios cpu update file, because the CPU speed is stuck at 6x100MHz; a program from toshiba like the guys on tabletpcbuzz found for the Protege M200.

The shop has access to special support numbers they can't give out, they can solve this in a day.

For Kenner, very different story; I'd contact the seller to see what he says.

He would probly say he didn't knew about it...aka tough luck

I PLAYED TOUGH-GUY AND USED THAT PROGRAM THAT UPDATES THE CPU TABLE FOR THE PROTEGE M200 AND IT WORKED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHOHOOOOOO

THIS IS THE PROGRAM: http://home.kc.rr.com/aitf311/tutorial.zip

BLU, a lot of other M30 owners have used the program and it worked perfectly, so u have absolutely no risk compared to me!!

I've got the utility and it worked!!!!!!!!!

Ok now the Power Utility shows 1-8 power steps.

I've decided to stick for a 3-8 config even in full power. Before the breakdown it was running at fixed 8 level. That setting may have "cooked" the mobo?

Using the RightMark Clock utility in the system tary, it looks like 95% time the CPU is stepping @ 598MhZ and immeditaly, when needed, popping to 1.6 GhZ.

There could be a short delay bitween the speed step, but I'm not noticeing it.

Nice. good find there kenner. Congrat's to both of you on getting that straightened out (and without legal assistance )

BTW, I didn't use kenner tip (just read it) but Toshiba "internal" utils!!! There are also som utils to stretch and test the M30!

When I'll find a little time I'll go for them.

P.S. - My HQ videos are soaring again!!!!!!! And love the RM clock util!

Does anyone know the difference between auto and fixed modes for the cpu? Which is recommended?
it' pretty obvious, fixed is...fixed, it makes the CPU stay at the speed u want it to stay and auto lets the CPU change speeds between the levels u set it to

surely it's recommended to stay at auto 3-8 so the CPU won't get hot and have a longer lifetime, tho i would certanly set it to fixed max speed when i play Anarchy Online or San Andreas or NFS: Most Wanted....but that shoudn't be an issue for u since you would have problems starting Solitaire with your video card (no offence)

Kenner, we did it!
yes we did !! i was so sad the other day i almost cried cos i spent all my money on this fine lappy (including the college money for the next 14months)

the cpu speed matter far`more for me, because the tecra has a dencent video card and i coudn't run any game...actually wtf...598MHz ? even my 8year old P3 was faster

WE RULEEEE

Serious? Fixed can fry your mobo? Wow, didnt know that. I ran my old laptop no fixed - 8 for a year and a half no problems. But I dont want to risk it. I just wouldnt like my cpu dropping down here and there. I want it at the peak performance and speed 24/7.

Ken, did you also switch to a 3-8 speed step?
