3790 Ram

I had a RAM stick go bad on me, and I am not sure what kind of RAM I should buy to replace it. I currently have one 512 stick and one open slot. Can I get a 1g stick and combine it with the 512, or do i have to match the current stick? Also, what brand and form factor do I need? Thanks so much!

It's totally up to you if you get a 1 gig stick or another 512, and you don't have to get two exact matching sticks. You might as well just go 1 gig if you don't mind paying a little extra. With the flashy new lappy's you get a small performance benefit from two identical sticks (Dual Channel), but you won't get that with the older chipset of the 3790.

Brand Also Isn't much of a big issue and is up to personal preference. I've got two 512 sticks of Kingston RAM in my 3790. Corsair Is also a good brand I'd vouch for. You should look for DDR333 because that is the fastest RAM the 3790 supports. You'll also need a DDR stick with a 200-pins and low density. Value RAM should suffice.

If you actually go to Kingston or Corsair's Website, you can do a search using their RAM Search Sections and find the exact model of RAM available that will work in the 3790. Take note Corsair has the "Clevo M37EW" listed instead of "Sager Midern 3790", but they are one in the same.

I believe ram brand IS an issue. You do not want to buy a no name stick of ram.

I currently have 2GB or RAM.

The stick that came with the system is Apacer 2700.
I could not find the same stick so I matched it up with Adata PC2700.

A stick of 1GB or PC2700 will cost you about $100.

Here is a list of memory from Newegg that 'should' work in your system. http://tinyurl.com/bw4wo

Also, are you sure the ram is bad, and not something else? Have you tried the ram in the other memory slot?

I probably didn't state myself correctly. I didn't really mean just get a no-name brand. I meant that Kingston, Corsair, Samsung etc are reputable brands and you'd be hard pressed to find any advantage of one of these brands over the other. They also offer solid warranties on their products also. It all comes down to your favourite flavour really.

But yes like you said, I certainly wouldn't reccommend no-name, generic RAM. They may have no warranty, but also they might have very lax/poor latency timings which can result in a bit of a performance drop.

Adding to that, if one stick has fast latency timings and you pair it with a stick of generic RAM with slow timings, the faster stick will only run the lower setting to avoid instability of the memory array. So, chose wisely Grasshopper

ram

The machine came with 2 512 sticks, and when I started having errors I took out one, still had problems, switched to the other, and the problems went away. I have tried the good stick in both memory slots with no issues, and the bad stick in both memory slots with severe issues. I'll probably look into getting a gig stick of kingston or corsair, since ~$100 is right in my budget range, and the performance increase of having 50% more RAM then before will be nice. Thanks very much for the feedback!

if you get a ddr400/pc3200 sodimm you can run it at slightly faster timings which will give you a small performance boost. there is a little chipset tweak program that allows you to change the ram timings on the i855pm chipset

And that chipset tweak program issss.........Where?
Its been tried before with the 3790 and the performance increase noted was accomplished with what settings? Was it........stable?
Good to know, need to know.

Thanks in advance and cheers

This might not be fully relevant, but I'm starting to seriously consider upgrading to 2GB. I've got 2 sticks of 512MB Kingston DDR400 at the moment.

I'm a big fan of the Source-Based Games, but lately they've been taking a while to load and then crashing with looping sounds. HL2: Episode 1 is easily the biggest culprit. If I can actually load a level, most times I can hardly play it for 5 minutes before it hits a wall.

I've tried everything but I just can't get HL2 Episode 1 to consistently run stable. The frame rates are quite reasonable considering the 3790's age, but it just crashes too often.

I'm finding that Source-Based stuff is gradually guzzling more and more RAM as time goes on.

It didn't seem all that long ago that 1GB was a magic number and "you'd never need more than 1GB". I think it can be safely said that those times are no longer

Tw855: http://forum.x86-secret.com/archive/...hp/t-2560.html

I have 1x 1024 pc3200 kingston and 1x 512mb pc3200 whatever that came with the laptop.

with the tweak thing i can run them both at 2-3-2-6 at 333mhz to bench 3dmark.

but this was a long time ago
