Ok. So i'm guessing it is the dell design that, let's say, would not allow a X700 mobility (if such a thing even exists) into my 9300...

Mr. K6 took the x600 out of a D810 and used it in his 9300. I don't think it was fully working though.

Actually didn't he (Mr. K6) also put a GO 6800 in the D810 aswell? Kinda cool upgrade for that unit!

Hmm so then it's not that it doesn't physically fit, it's just not compatible?

Yeah. It physically fit fine. There was just some compatibility problems.

I can verify that the ATI X600 works fine w/o any compatibility problems in my I9300.
Once I had swapped the heatsinks between the X300(I9300) & X600(D810), the GPU fit in the slot quite nicely...

K6 musta just been too lazy to install the right drivers I guess. That's good to know though.

LOL.. You've missed it dude!! Many of us got the 7800GTX for $252.22 from Dell Spare Parts over the past few months. Unfortunately they have put a stop to that price.

You never looked at the sticky thread at the top of the forum?? Check it out "How To Upgrade your 9300 with the Ultra or 7800 "Photo Guide""!

Basically you'll need to have the 9-cell battery as the 6-cell will NOT work. You'll also have to buy a new 130watt power brick which go for about 40.00 bucks on eBay. The Northbridge heatsink must be the newer XPS style although almost all 9300s already have this. A few people who bought their 9300s earily on have noticed a slightly different heatsink which needed to be replaced. I dont think it was much. There is a downloadable iso which contains a hacked XPS BIOS which you need to use. Flashing the BIOS of the 9300 to the XPS allows you to use the 130w power brick therefore providing enough juice for the 7800GTX!

I think I was the last person who was able to get it for 252.22 from Dell that I know of. I had called on a thursday and it took 2 calls before I was able to get a rep to sell it to me for that price. Many people have had to call 6, 7 and even 8 times before a rep would. The next day on Friday I noticed the order had been canceled! I called and the rep resubmitted it for me and I had it the following Tuesday I think! I haven't heard of anyone else getting it after that Friday.

Sigh. Looks like no 7800GTX's in my future. If I could just O/C the slow 6800 a bit more. hehe
