Best Anti Virus Software - Page 2

post #21 of 65
Have been using AVG for around a year now. Has frequent updates, almost every 2 days and is fairly lightweight!

I used to use norton, bit resource hog and when it did detect something if often couldn't remove it automatically - you have to go to the symantec site and find how to do it manually.

Use AVG Free now, no problems yet.

I don't know where you're looking, but it's 69.95 US through Circuit City's hotline number, and you get a free year of software support too.

Though, that doesn't mean much here, we are all PC junkies in some capacity.

used to think avg/avast was good for freebies but have had several virii at work and both those didnt detect it, only bit defender did and NOD32.

NOD32 updates virii database every 30mins, norton is like 2 weeks!

avg it is less resource intensive than avast! and is free which is a plus (avast is free too)
post #29 of 65
whoops double post plus a bunch of other confusion..

AVG get my vote - takes less resources. My notebook and desktop start faster and run faster with AVG rather than Norton.

First vote for Norton Corporate, I've used most/all and see them daily in the housecalls I do, and they all seem to have diff problems. Corporate takes almost no resources, updates daily, scans quickly. The problem is that you need to be a corporation to get it..... or off ebay for like $9
post #32 of 65
Norton AV does a good job. Updates every day. I've had problems with Panda. Not a fan of it.
post #33 of 65
another vote for Kaspersky, although I am using the v5 Personal Edition, not the latest 2006 which I think some others have mentioned...but yeah every 30mins - 1hr it will update with the latest defs....never had a problem with it...have been using for around 2 years now.

Jeeez!, where have I been? Didn't have any idea that there are so many anti virus programs out there other than ol' norton and mccaffee. Thanks for all the feedbacks. I d/l'd avast the other day, but I think I'm gonna try either kaspersky (did I spell that right?) or nod32. I looked at their website and looks very impressive (and inexpensive). Appreciate all the feedbacks. I'm pretty sure some other ignoramus like me will benefit from this thread. Cheers!

Sure.. I'll take the 22 hour plane trip over to the states, find the closest CC and get it.

Any way... US$70 works out to be the same as AU$128

So there is no point... Its still a ripoff

Notice, also, the detailed report at the bottom of the page. Very interesting results. Nothing is 100%.

Kaspersky for me. Had it for 2 years now. Love it!

Kaspersky, Avast, Panda, Trend, Mcaffe

Tried them all.. And i dont like them

All of thier firewall's sucks because you cant config them that well.
EG with Kaspersky, I cant tell it a safe zone or not.. Its either ON for everything. or OFF

Back on with norton it goes...

i used to work for Kaspersky AV and we would have machines come in from local clients with norton or mcafee and after installing the latest version of Kaspersky AV we would find numerous trojans and malware that went totally undetected by norton or mcafee! also you can turn down the scanning engine to give you less of a drag on your system!

not to advertise, but if anyone would like a recommendation on where/how to buy some Kaspersky AV licenses take a look at

www.ice-kav.com (ICE Systems is the largest reseller of Kaspersky software in the U.S.) Ask for Stefan

EDIT:: changed website to go directly to the kaspersky section of the website

Kaspersky has been reported best of the paid versions. Kaspersky has a
FREE online scan that has also been reported as the best.

The Kaspersky Online Scanner uses Microsoft ActiveX technologies to scan your computer for malicious code.
The scanner uses MS Internet Explorer to scan your machine while online,
and offers the same exceptional detection rates as other Kaspersky Lab products.{Click link here}

As it says above, can't use Firefox for the scan, and it just locates the virus, repair/removal is left to you, but the detection rate is the best.

For your Firewall, ZoneAlarm (FREE Version) is what I replaced my Norton Personal Firewall with halfway through its paid subscription.

I have version 6x(Works Great)but others have said to stick with 5x, Get it here (PC World)link

For FREE AntiVirus, based on {This Report (of all of them, free & paid) click here}

I went with AntiVir (Avast would be my other choice) three weeks ago and love it.
(installed both WinXP and Win98 [for LM] on same download.)

However, last week, they came out with "Free ver7" (I have "Free ver6") and
their "Free" servers have been overloaded.

AntiVir Personal Edition Classic {from CastleCops}

At this moment, my recommendation would be to use Avast or AntiVir 6x.

I am a nine year loyal Norton Fan, just quit their NAV but still have a lot of the 'Utilities'
(most of which I installed before Norton Bought Them Out!).
