My fan cranks up to high speed periodically no matter what I'm doing. Even if I just freshly boot into XP and not touch it for the rest of the day, the fan goes to full speed every 5-10 minutes for about 5 seconds at a time.

YMMV

I'm studying graphic design and a laptop is a must for me. Even though the school has computers for me to use, they are crappy azzed e-macs (for 1st and 2nd year students, everyone else gets to use those sexy G5's on 21" screens). I find it a lot more efficient to use my own laptop (and so do 10 out 14 peeps in my class). I also don't have to be constantly transfering files from one machine to the next.

I tried using my Sager for a semester and it was too inconvenient (mostly the bulkyness and weight). So I got a 15" powerbook. It rocks. The only computer I use at home though is my Sager. Even though the powerbook comes with an M9 it sucks! I cannot play UT2k3 on it. And Macs have a limited selection of games.

My personal recomendation for anyone would be a Powerbook for school. And a real gaming machine for gaming.

The 4780 has multiple fans and variable speed fans. It's not like you have a constant drone... it has 3 different levels of noise and you don't have much control over when it changes. Don't be fooled by the people who say the sound isn't a problem. The people who say theirs is just fine are either deaf or too afraid to admit that it's a problem.
I disagree totally. The fans very rarely ever kick on. I use my 4780 all the frickin time and the fans are on about 3% of the time. I have above average hearing and I have used lots of notebooks. This is no better or no worse than most desktops replacements. It is noticable when the fans kick on high, but outside of that nothing. I use mine in class a lot right now. 5 CIS courses this semester. The fans rarely kick on if ever. They seem to kick on more often after about 3 hours of heavy usage, but a classroom setting is usually not heavy usage. Trust me alienwares old 51m was a lot louder and the fans ran a lot more often(85% of the time). Anyone who think there system is too load needs to buy a centrino (or some old weak pos).

I know if someone brought a machine as loud as the 4780, I would tell them to shut it off.... unless it was necessary or it was masked by other noise. I'm not taking classes but the noise level of many rooms was too low for the sager and the variable speed fan would annoy the students and professor.
My professors love the 4780 and the kids are no different. I have not had a single complaint or foul look.

1) Maybe your anal
2) I have had tons of lappys this is a great deal for the money. I do like thinkpads just as much, but the prices suck.
3) If you told me to shut it off I would laugh at you.

If you think the 4780 is bad than why do you have one, or if you don't have one than what is your arguement based on? Gheez some people.

The fan noise wil probably bother you more than it bothers anyone else. I know the fan on my 8890 did, but no one ever complained. The only time anyone ever noticed the noise was when it would kick in when the room was silent. The first few days I brought mine to class I asked around to see if it bothered anyone and they all said no.

it's thick.. honestly if you think about it, 1.7 is really thick. as thick as a compaq.

My laptops 1.18

i take my 4780 to class, people sit next toe me even ... fan noise is nothing... lol once teacher was talking and everyone was quite, so i turn on the lappy, and there goes the LOUD BEEEEP , half the class turn and look at me , i'm like ,oh **** sorry , wont happen again... lol 4 seconds later windows logo coems on ANOTHER LOUD sound, teacher asked me to leave, hahahahahahah

Actually, for me, the sound of the clicky-clack of the keyboard would bother me much more than the low hum of a fan. Even for 'quiet' keyboards, the sound would be similar to someone drumming their fingers on their desk.

As always, YMMV

There are some settings where I can see that having the notebook in a classroom is beneficial and where noise does not matter. The perfect case is in a class that is in a computer lab and already has a bunch of computers humming.

But, I own a 4780 and there is absolutely no way that I would bring it into a class setting. The 4780's fans go on even with NO ACTIVITY. Maybe yours is different (if you even have one b/c I notice many of these posts refer to other sagers and not the 4780). I know nothing of the other sagers. They may be absolutely quiet.

What I was led to believe (from this forum) is that the 4780 would be quiet. Well it's just not true so I'm trying to heavily emphasize this to the student who is asking if this is appropriate for a classroom setting.

Another note... I personally could stand the fan noise in the classroom but it's just not fair to the other students (or the professor if it's a smaller room). They are trying to learn (hopefully) and the less distraction the better.

But whatever. Just be honest with yourself when you find that the wishful thinking of the 4780 being quiet is not a reality.

I have found it guys!
The only notebook that i think would ever be useful for a non computer major student!

A Tablet Notebook!! That is so fricking cool . . its like writing on a pda . . but with a bigger piece of paper !

Now if only someone would come out with a low heat, long battery life, gaming notebook/tablet so i could game and jot down notes while only dropping down one big roll of cash!

. A tablet, what a joke! The most powerful video card you can get on those is a 32 mb gforce 5200 . Not only that, but their interface is clunky and they cost a fortune. Gaming tablets are even further away than 3 pound gaming notebooks.

Hey there
Note my "now if someone would come out with" remark there bud
