Formatting a New Hard Drive Question

Thread Starter
Hi,

I'm upgrading the 5400 RPM hard drive in my gen1 XPS to a 7200 rpm hard drive and just wanted to make sure if after I've put the hardware in, do I just follow the normal steps for "reformatting" a hard drive (as per the Dell FAQ on this board), or is there another step involved for a completely new hard drive? ie do I just put in the windows xp disk, hit F12, and go from there, or do I need to do anything else first? I'm a noob at this, so even "obvious" advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

should be just as easy as installing the hd, and booting the computer from your xp cd and formatting/installing from that.

ya and you will notice a difference when accessing data off your hard drive sense you upgraded to 7200rpm..but ya pop the cd in after getting the hard drive in and follow what the cd tells you to do
