bypassing/resetting bios password ??

a friend got her laptop ( T42 Model: 2374 )stolen for a few hours and when she got it back the person who took the lappy had set a bios password and done a complete system restore....

now she cant access the lappy at all... is there any way to reset the password other than send it back to ibm ?

thanks a lot

that sounds a bit dodgy. I suggest she contact the person who took it and get the password. There are only two ways of resetting an ibm bios password, you send it back to ibm and they replace the motherboard, or you can send it to various companies who will crack the password for you. There is a drawback to both options, you need to prove you are the genuine owner of the thinkpad. But that wont be a problem as its your friends machine anyway.

ya the ibm option has already been looked into... $150 if its a simple bios password reset but $700 if its a motherboard replacement ! might was well buy a new laptop for that kind of money...

does having a 3 year warranty help in this case ?

they have to change the whole motherboard since it has this crazy encryption thing that protect the computer so if you locked it then you are screwed.

there is this guy on ebay that unlocks them with brute force passwords cracking he should be way less expensive, but you should be the owner of the computer and able to prove it.

your warrenty has nothing to do with it, the computer is doing exactly what it shuold, you are teh one at fault here.

Couldn't you just remove the bios battery and then short circuit the battery to discharge the bios battery and then chuck the hard drive since it has a password and it's useless since you can't crack that password. Buy another hard drive and install the operating system. Just a suggestion.........

that will make it WORSE. you will get a message saying that the pc has been tampered with and you will get no bootup. you will then HAVE to enter an admin password.
