Laptop with these options seems hard to find!

Must be 17"
1920 X 1200 res.
64 bit
under $2000

I've looked at Dell E1705 and MSI-1036, but they failed due to not being 64 bit or too low of resolution.

Any help would be great.

Thanks.

One other thing... must have at least X300 or better graphics ability. No onboard garbage.

It seems that I am looking for a mythical beast....

I don't know that I would recommend it, but I did look over this machine, before I settled on the M170. ...

It's a little more than $2k, but you're getting a 7800GTX, which, in my opinion, is worth every penny.

I would lurk in the Sager forums for a while, to see if that's something you want to jump into. I decided against it just because I didn't want to wait for the model to be released (this was back in November), and I didn't like the idea of working through a reseller. But those are flexible points.

Cheers!

If I could only tone down the graphics card or processor just a bit in that laptop it would be great.

alot of people swear by sager. as a matter of fact, i was looking into those also when i was in the market for a computer. i wanted d/c 64 bit and a beasty grahpics card, however in a 15.4 size computer... sadly that dosent exist yet... but it should be coming (8204 i think was already released... but its intel )

that sager for the extra cash is worth it... good luck tho

If you want something more affordable, and don't need the top-of-the-line graphics card (but still a very capable one) go for the Sager 5710.

Why do you need 64-bit? Are there any particular applications you use that require it? Really, the difference between 32 and 64-bit won't really be noticeable or relevant for several more years.

I run database servers on my machines, so I would probably want to run the 64 bit versions when possible. I am also a programmer, so it would be nice to be able to use the 64 bit versions of upcoming products. I understand 64 bit isn't mainstream now, but I also would prefer not to cough up again for another laptop if there is something I would like to run.

Thanks ... I may still be swayed in my decision.

Excellent. I'm glad you have real, legitimate reasons for wanting 64 bit, unlike many people who can't quite articulate why they need it.

If you want an almost-there-but-not-quite-what-you-want laptop, there's the Acer Ferrari 4005: 15.4" screen, WSXGA+ display, Turion processor.

Did I mention 64 bits is a bigger number, so it must be better....

Assuming my 17" machine is a dream, what can I do to find everything I want in a 15.4" machine..... with the same specs:
WUXGA, 64-bit, and X300 or better graphics....

or maybe I'll fall back to the MSI-1036. The only thing it was lacking was the WUXGA.
Personally, I think the 1036 is a pretty great deal. WSXGA+ isn't bad at all for 17" since you get almost as much resolution as WUXGA, at least compared to WXGA. I found WSXGA+ on the small side for 15.4", but that's because I gravitate toward slightly lower resolutions.

I run two 19" monitors at work @ 1600X1200, so I was hoping to get a high resolution like WUXGA.
Why don't you just buy a 64 bit laptop with x300 or better gpu and connect it to an external monitor? ...compromise

Still needs to be portable. Not wanting to lug a 19" monitor around.

If it helps, I think a 17" WSXGA+ will have roughly the same pixel density as your 19" monitors. So at least the text will appear to be almost the same size. In terms of absolute pixel density:

UXGA: 1.92 megapixels
WSXGA+: 1.76 megapixels

Good luck with your search.

I'm going to purchase the MSI-1036. I've done alot of research on it, it seems like an awesome buy...

I was doing that little comparison myself. Any input on the "Glare Type" screen that comes with the MSI-1036. Is it a good screen?

It should be a decent screen; all the "glare type" means is that it's one of those glossy screens seen on the majority of laptops today. They make images look spectacular, and allow the display to render black a lot darker, but they also reflect overhead lights and tend to lead to increased eyestrain (I can vouch for this, as my old system had a glossy display, and my new one has a matte display).
