if you do in fact want to visit the coffeeshops, i can tell you a little more about where we went and what places felt comfortable. i would have liked to eat out more, but we were hooked up with this houseboat for free and had a kitchen to use........plus the wife wanted to save some money for the rest of our three months off.
we went to the rijksmuseum, madam tousauds wax place, a sex museum near the dam, a sex show in the red light district(the place with the elephants i think), the ann frank house, several open air markets and lots more. i envy you if you are going in the spring or summer as the women are beautiful and they were all in winter gear then.
at first we were kinda leary of hanging out in the red light district after dark, since i dont know you or what you look like i cant recommend either way as to what you should do. i am told that i usually frighten children and old ladies unless i am smiling..........also i tend to be very on guard when in unfamiliar places and watch the people who are watching me.
our friends from the ice were there at the same time and stayed right in the red light area, so there were many nights that we walked the area looking at the girls......what can i say, even when my wife tells the story it is, "there were some of the most beautiful women you have ever seen at night, along with some of the most hidious when morning came around".
good luck and i hope you have a great time there, if there is anything you want clarification on just ask.
