Help! This buzzing is driving me cucu!

Hey,

I've connected my I9300 to my Toshiba 30HFX84 HDTV via a DVI->HDMI cable. For the audio, I used the headphone jack and a little piece that converts that type of jack to the dual RCA (white and red) one. All is well, the picture is phenomenal. That is, until I plug the laptop in!

Once I plug it in to the AC, an audible noise comes on from the TV as an annoying humm, that disappears right after I unplug the power from the laptop (and have it running on batteries. It will even start buzzing if I barely start to insert the power into the laptop, or the other end into the outlet. That is, it will start buzzing even before the laptop gets any power...

I have tried different outlets for both the TV and the lappie. WTF is going on?

It sounds like your adapter isn't delivering clean power. Just a guess though.

Yea clean power

I'd agree. Are you useing a power cleaning powerstrip on you tv? I'm guessing not. I'd definatly suggest getting one. I got mine for my new 46inch DLP tosh TV and it made a great difference I got the Monster brand think it was $100

Ground-loop Isolator would fix that. Getting buzzed is not always a good thing...

Yea it could be my adapter...since before it was acting up, w/ the little led turning off sometiems although it doesn't seem to do that anymore.

I don't see why I should install any filters or cleaning "strips" if there is no problem on battery...

Go ahead and get the adapter replaced. When that still doesn't fix the audio hum, go down to radio shack and spend $10 bucks on a groundloop isolator which will definitely fix the hum problem...

Well I'm getting it replaced from Dell anyway b/c of the led turning on and off (although it doesn't happen anymore).

Is there some other device I could hook up to output audio to my TV so as to check if that also has the problem? If it does, then you're probably right and it's the ground loop thing.

If I am to test w/ another device, am I right in saying it has to have 3 connectors (have a ground connection too?)

I tried w/ my iRiver and its adapter but that didn't produce any hum, but it's not a grounded device.

If you no longer have audio hum on your HDTV after plugging the notebook adapter into the above, you have ground-loop so your notebook adapter is working fine and need not be replaced...

Ok I have some new findings.

I tried with a different audio cable, different phonejack to RCA converter, different TV, different, plug, and guess what even a different laptop! Seems this is quite a global issue.

I haven't found the ground loop isolator yet. My dad went to "the source: by circuit city" (the new radio shack) but tehy don't have it. We'll go to different places tomorrow.

weird, once you get it working let me know what DVI to HDMI cable you bought, i'm currently looking for one to hook up to my dad's 52inch DLP TV.

I'm quite convinced it is the power brick.
I've had about the same problem with both my Inspiron 8000 and my Inspiron 9300.

And I bet you my undies that it won't change a thing even if you have Dell send you another adapter.

Btw:
Did anyone already ask Dell to replace the power brick? Did you have to send back the old one?

listen to the dude saying its ground loop. He is right.

Well I'm getting a new adapter anyway since the light turns off on it sometimes.

By now I'm pretty sure it is the ground loop. My dad is out shopping trying to find it right now.

BTW the guy's house I tried at last night also had a Dell laptop! (I told you I tried a different TV, outlet (different house), and different laptop)

Okay. You said that.
I must have missed the part where you said what came out of all of this.
Like there was no buzzing with that guy's notebook or so.

Nevermind...

lol well yea I never said it didn't work. But I did say "this seems to be a global issue", meaning yea, it still buzzed.

It surely is my poor knowledge of English that keeps me from getting your point, but if you had the same buzzing issue with your friend's notebook and his power brick, how do you know now that it isn't the power brick but this ground loop thing?
Sorry 'bout being a pain...

Btw.:
Do you have to send back your power adapter when you get the new one sent to you or can you keep it?

I said it IS prbly the ground loop thing...

I do'nt know if I have to send the old one back since I haven't requested a new power brick yet. Don't worry you're not being a pain.

Damn I can't find this ground loop insulator anywhere!

My dad tried The Source by Circuit City, Canadian Tire, Home Depot and none had it.

Anyone know where I can find one in Toronto, Canada?

EDIT: Although, I found this http://forums.macnn.com/archive/index.php/t-35097.html where the ppl say they got theirs at radio shack (same as "The source") wtf.

Is your TV plugged into a different outlet than the computer? One thing that causes a high probability of a ground loop hum is when you plug in two devices on different circuits and interconnect them with a cable such as this audio cable.

There is one way, other than a Ground Loop Isolator, to get around this hum. If you have a receiver with coaxial digital audio input (essentially a single RCA connection), or your flat panel has this connection (usually orange, but not always), the digital signal will not be affected by the hum. You just need the little A/V output dongle that came with the computer.
