Keeping your spare cables organized?

Hi All,

I'm not sure if this is offtopic in here, but I figure cables are sort of like hardware so...

Anyway, I'm cleaning up the office and I have a bunch of cables that are laying around in a cabinet. I don't want to throw them away in case I might need them later on. But now they're a big mess and all tangled up.

How do you guys and gals keep your spare cables (network, power, audio, usb, firewire, etc) organized?

Every time I clean out the office I end up putting the cables in boxes, more or less by category, but after a while they keep tangling up and it is hard to find the one cable 'you know you had, but where is that thing...'

Thanks!

Sounds like what you are doing now, but I keep all my spare cables in old motherboard boxes with labels on them. I then have those boxes (as well as other various PC parts) dropped inside some of those large rubbermaid tubs. If tangling is a problem, maybe try some twist ties after folding/rolling them up?

I just get them nicely wrapped and then zip tie them, and then organize by use. power cables in one box, DVI & VGA in another, internal IDE & SATA in another. I actually use stackable bins to keep my stuff organized.

Thanks for the replies folks, it sounds like my current system only need a little more perfection.

I have 2 boxes, one holds larger cables, one holds smaller cables. The larger box has power, cable, parallel, etc. The smaller box has 2 boxes in it. One box has small telephone adapters and extenders and cable splitters, etc. The other is loaded with telephone and composite A/V cables. On top of this is any computer/other cable that I decide to pitch in the box.

Most cables are twist-tied, although I am finding "tie-less" methods to keep cables from tangling. I think I am going to "upgrade" to those rubbermaid bins.

-Cool-
