5720 Backlight?!? (5720 owners please help)

My Sager 5720 backlight has a dark area extending down the center of the screen in a verticle column starting just about right below the webcam. I'm thinking of returning and re-purchasing because I'm still within my 30 days. But before I decide to return it or not, I need to know if this is a problem with my laptop alone, or with all 5720's or if it's a problem with the 1920x1200 screens... Please if you have the 5720 could you check your screen and see if there is any darkening in the area my screen has (it shows up most if you make the whole screen brown), and if you do/don't have any problems could you please post, and post what resolution your screen is? Thanks!

Here are two pictures of my screen:

I'll wait for a few more people to reply, but I'm thinking I'll probably do that.

Hehe, there's a reason why I don't "get a Dell dude!" Dell's lack of quality assurance shouldn't be an excuse for Sager's. I have contacted Sager and recieved an RMA#, they say that they will replace my lcd and compare the replacement to make sure that I get a better one.

I'll update this thread with a report on Sager's quality of service so the potential buyers can be informed.

So far I've talked to a technician named Allen who was very friendly and patient. Let's just hope things go well when I actually get my laptop sent back.

I have slightly the same problem. My screen doesn't have a perfect homogenous (sp?) light distribution.

But since it doesn't bother AND I don't have the option of RMAing it back, I just live with that.

I have a similar problem, although instead of a band down the middle, the right side of my screen is darker than the left half. I didn't really notice until I looked at a screen with a white-background from a distance, and then it jumped out at me. Now, I notice it all the time.

I bought from PC Torque, so I guess I'll contact them to see what the return process is. It's a real bummer, because I've finally gotten all myapps installed, tweaked, etc.

Replying to my own post, but had to post the resolution to my problem. I sent a query to Sager, by the next morning had a response. I sent them a photo, and in a couple of hours had another reply. Basically, all I had to do was toggle the brightness up and down a few times, and voila! grey-bar gone!

Kudos to Sager for a quick response.

Since we are on the backlight subject, let me tell another oddity of the 5720.

As you all might have noticed, the backlight level in the 5720 is quantified. Everytime you press Fn+F8 (f9? Doesn't matter...) to decrease the backlight, it goes down one determined step.

Now, I don't know if that happens on all 5720s, but on mine, if I go down from the brightest level to the second brightest level, it seems that the power to the backlight becomes unstable: the backlight goes up/down every once in a while, like old 8790s with loosen cables.

It doesn't happen in the brightest level, or any other level except the second brightest.

DOes this happen to anyone else?

and I suggest this thread to be moved to the 5720 support area. Someone, in the future, might have similar problems and check the thread there.
