filesharing troubles, NEED HELP!! about to go crazy!

alright well i just got my wireless internet for my laptop and got it all configured and setup.

so i was wanting to transfer files from the home computer to the laptop, well i was having troubles doing it with wireless, so i just connected both computers to the router, thinking it might help. well, its still giving me fits!

heres the problem:
host computer:
windows XP sp2:
can view all of the network... the host computer and my laptop

my laptop:
xp sp2
under network places, it only shows the shared doc's on my laptop, and lets me see NOTHING from the host computer.

how do i fix this?
i did the 'setup a home or small office network' and saved it to a floppy and ran it on the laptop and its still not working on the laptop... but i can do everything i want on the Host computer.

im thinking its some sort of password protection on the host computer, but not sure what or how to access it?

i did some reading on Simple File Sharing, from the microsoft website:

To turn Simple File Sharing on or off in Windows XP Professional, follow these steps: 1. Double-click My Computer on the desktop.
2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
3. Click the View tab, and then select the Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended) check box to turn on Simple File Sharing. (Clear this check box to turn off this feature.)

only problem, the Host computer doesnt have the Simple File Sharing feature, when i go through those commands....

somebody help!!!! im about to go crazy with this.

and i get this box:

\\Beth is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

logon failureL the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.

was about to say that

also go into windows firewall (if it's enabled) in exceptions and make sure "file and printer sharing" is checked, if it isnt it won't work

yes

both under same name, and file sharing is turned on, on both computers...

i read a few writeups on how to share files on a network from a Google search, but its still not working.
There should be a button below where you stipulate the share name, "permissions". If you're not hypersensitive about intrusion, grant all permissions to all the listeds groups.

is the WORKSTATION service on AUTOMATIC in your CONTROL PANEL>ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS>SERVICES? reboot after you turned it on if it was off.

on the host computer... there is no 'permissions' thats what i thought was weird when i was reading the write ups from google...

and sabor, i open that folder, CP>Admin Tools and its just icons... no options to turn stuff on.

there is no user account, just one account that my mom uses, and its the admin. account. does that matter?

if i could just find a good solid write up online on how to network, from start to finish, to make sure everything is how it should be... but cant find anything like that on this site, which surprised me
post #11 of 77
here's the Networking write up you were looking for>> http://home.comcast.net/~awgest/Networking.htm wait for the file to load. it might take some seconds to load.

in CP>Admin Tools folder, there's the SERVICES icon. thats where you'll find the WORKSTATION service. you click on SERVICES icon.

just checked both computers, both computers have Workstation "started"

i will check out that article...

also, can i do wireless file transfer? or do both computers needs to be wired to the router?

thanks
sounds like you're using a wireless router. maybe the wireless router needs some settings changed to allow the communication between those computers.you can transfer files from a wired to a wireless connection. you'll have to acces the router's settings page. you can normally access the router's settings page by typing 192.168.1.1 at your web browser's address bar. when you did the network wizard, did you specify that you access the internet via a GATEWAY? the gateway is your router.

the couple times i have done the setup wizard, i do the Recommended option..

i just re did it, and selected the ' select another way ' option, and chose a gateway... and i still get the same message from the my laptop, which i connected DIRECTLY to the back of the wireless router....

still get the same message on the laptop though..

my network places>view workgroup computers> then i select my moms desktop... and it says this

\\Beth is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer

i also typed that into address bar, and got a page cannot not be displayed.

just tried finding something to tweak the router settings...

theres nothing ong the desktop to change or modify the router settings. the box came with 2 disks, one for router setup, and one for wireless card setup.

the laptop, installed the wireless card setup cd on, has a D Link Utility function, but its for the card

dang this is really confusing!

well i called D Link support, and the guy said its something in the settings on the OS, not on the router, so now i need to try to find a contact number for MS to help figure this out!

wow... so i finally find a number to call for MS concerning my issue... the lady tells me she CANT HELP ME because the home desktop was professionally built for my mom, and my laptop has an 'open license agreement' for the registry key, so she is not allowed to assist me with technical problems.

i either have to call the place that built the home desktop, or pay out the wazoo to try and fix this.

THANKS MICROSOFT

iirc for a workgroup to work properly both computers need to have the same username on both systems. IE user1 on lappy and user1 on desktop, for sharing to work properly./
post #19 of 77
i just formatted my D: drive and tried to access it using my OTHER computer. i received the same error you recieved with the ACCESS PERSMISSIONS. i fixed it by right clicking the D: drive and clicking on SHARING and choosing NEW SHARE. i gave it a name and checked the PERMISSIONS making sure that i had a checkmark on FULL CONTROL. i am now able to access that drive from my OTHER computer.

let me add that i had my SABOR account disabled on the D: drive computer.

sabor..

so i would need ot access the C: drive on the Host (desktop) computer?

if so, i did that, went to sharing, but there is no 'new share' and no permissions either. my laptop with xp pro has permissions, but the desktop with xp home however does not...

im gettin real frustrated with this... cant seem to make ANYTHING work... hell i even have a crossover cable, and couldnt get that to work!!

i've checked, double checked and triple checked all the names and ip addresses are compatible.
