filesharing troubles, NEED HELP!! about to go crazy! - Page 2

crossover cables are used for direct PC to PC connection. if you're connecting to a router, that cable isn't going to work. is CLIENT for MICROSOFT NETWORKS installed?

i know the cable is for PC to PC... thats what i did. plugged the cable in between the 2 computers, and still got nothing.

how do i check to see if client is installed? because im not sure.

another problem i just encountered is after i went and changed all the IP's thinking it might help, and now my wireless on the laptop wont work, but it gets signal if its wired... im about to throw all this shit in the street!
THROW IT ON MY STREET!!! let me give you my address !LOL!

to check: CONTROL PANEL>NETWORK CONNECTIONS> and right click on your network card. choose PROPERTIES and you should see it in there. im pretty sure the NETWORK CONNECTION WIZARD setup already did that, but you can always check and see.

lets try it this way: create the network on your winxp pro, then go to your network connection wizrd on winxp HOMe and choose to JOIN a network. did you create the same USERNAME account on both computers? you'll need to that before you join the network.

no network card on the laptop... i dont recall seeing it under network connections, even when it was working. WTF!?

when you say user account... each computer only has one account each.
so i need to create an additional account on each computer?

the weird thing.. the desktop sees itself AND my laptop on the network.

the laptop only sees itself on the network, and NOT the desktop! even after multiple setup wizards, and installing the setup disk from the setup wizard that was made from the desktop.

also i dont see the JOIN A NETWORK option!

i feel like im an idiot because im not a techy like most of the guys/girls here that would have no problem getting this to work!

well i manually set the workgroup on the house computer, to the network i created on the laptop.

but, i have the SAME problem on this network... except its flip flopped on the 2 computers.

desktop sees only itself
laptop sees both, but get the SAME error when i try to access the desktop

EDIT!
and now, on the laptop, when i go to C: properties, sharing..
now i have no permissions tab!!! but i had it before i created the network.

has anybody ever seen this much trouble? how the heck do i get this to work properly? i never thought it would be this much hassle!

do you have NEW CONNECTION WIZARD located in START>ACCESORIES>COMMUNICATION? hopefully you'll get it to work by the time i get back. check back with you later.

If you just want to share files, you can download a free FTP server, or apache, the free webserver, and put it on the host machine.

As an aside: has ANYONE not had heaps of trouble the first time they've tried to set up windows filesharing? It's the clunkiest system ever.

What's all the workgroup bullshit for? Why can't I go to one machine and click on a folder to share, give it a name, and then go to the other and type "mount \\192.168.1.3\PORN_COLLECTION i:\" and have it work?

why should i need to download something, when i purposely went out and spent money on this router/wireless card... and a crossover cable from radioshack in order to try to accomplish the feat of transferring files?

no matter what i do, im not able to access or view the desktops files at all.

and i created a specific workgroup, because i was told thats what you have to do to share files on a network.

btw, yes i do have the, new connection wizard, but not sure exactly what the correct steps are to try and make it work.

im to the point, im so frustrated, its getting the best of me and i hate that.

The router and networking gear only let your computers talk to each other.

Now you need software that allows those computers to say something meaningful to each other, such as the contents of the files you want to transmit.

Windows' included software for this purpose is pretty poor; I'm merely suggesting alternate software that does the same thing but is known to work better.

so do both computers need apache?

i still dont understand why its not working though...
No. Apache (or the ftp server of your choice) are server programs, only used on the computer that has the files you want to share. It's quite likely that the website you are looking at right now was served off of a machine running apache. It's a bit tricky to set up, though, so you'd probably be better off using a ftp server.

Bdub,

Does any of the accounts on either the laptop or the desktop have a password? If not, I would suggest you create an account on them with passwords. That should resolve your problem...oh, and return all your settings to before you started fiddling with them. I find I do more damage to my own stuff messing with settings that I don't understand.

Bdub, did you get it to work?

It's always the small posts in a big thread that contain the right answer .

so im sure i will get flamed for this..

but whats the easiest way to set it to where both computers have same username and password? just create another user account on each computer?
well, for the XPHome edition, you go to Control Panel>Users and create the account; for the XPPro edition, Right CLick the START button and choose EXPLORE. right click MY COMPUTER and choose MANAGE. you should see LOCAL USERS AND GROUPS in there. just create the same user in there.

so can i just rename each account that already exists, to the same name,

desktop XP home admin account: user1
laptop XP pro admin account: user1

and have both the same passwords? or do there need to be seperate accounts?

alright,
i created identical accounts on each computer,

now do what account does each computer need to be logged into in order to share
