I like her line about not leaving valuables in the car...such as CD's and MP3's. Next time I'll check to make sure I don't leave any digital music files laying out in the open in my car.

I wouldnt jest because that is an indicator that you have a CD capable Head Unit in your car. If there were tapes lying around chances are your car would be missed in the search for something more worthwhile

This from a fellow car stereo thief

You could always just really annoy thiefs... Get a hidden stereo set-up. And leave eight track tapes laying on your seats with an Eight Track player visible....

8 track player face plate that flips up to reveal the in dash cd changer - nice idea. I'll have to call Lexus today and ask if they can install the 8 track for me.

Let's ask Gsferrari what his thoughts would be seeing the 8 track on a lexus dash. Would it be a target? Does it call your name and ask you to take it?

If I saw a 8 track player in your car I would take it anyway out of pity for you and install one of my stolen CD players because you are clearly incapable of buying one for yourself

Of course - if it is a Lexus...then I will smash up the car because you dont deserve to be driving one without a good CD player

either way.... result ->

What would put me off is a kenwood tape player and kenwood speakers...

Cerwin Vega, MBQuart, JBL and MTX are all too droolable to miss...Adire Audio's Subwoofers are also targeted...very very impressive subwoofers

Reel to reel!

Reel to reel player setup with both CD and Tape deck behind it. Make it motoized so the reels actually spin while music plays that would be awsome!

One of my buddies bought expensive speakers, but would buy the cheapest grills he could find to try to hide them.

Thats a common ploy - unfortunately pro car thieves know that good equipment is better without muffling grills and they have torches to look in. Its a tough call really...I had a friend who used all sorts of clues, had friends in popular car audio stores to get tip offs about major installs. He targeted the guys with super equipment using these tip-offs...

Its a shady world out there

Which is why some of us pay cash and do the install ourselves.

Caught too many of the "non-pro" thieves out at uni not to catch onto the correlation.

Then again, these were the type of guys who were brillant enough to break into an occupied apartment.

LOL...

Ive heard about these "occupied" break ins. Unfortunately this guy at my university broke into this girls apartment because he wanted a condom...he was from the next room banging the girl there

crazy world!!

Cars are ridiculously easy to break in and the pros scoff at the "Protected By Immobilizer" because they really dont care about mobilizing the car at all...

You will be surprised to find that the Mercs classify on the top of the list of "Easy to Break In" cars...

Yeppers...

actually, I've found that most of the high-end cars were rather pathetic on security. Trucks were iffy...

The best security I've ever seen was the "Eggbeater". Imagine a 1992 Honda Civic with 6K in audio equipment hidden inside of the original equipment... there is nothing exposed (which cost the guy an extra couple of bucks to do himself), Best part, 2 faceplates, one is the original one from Honda (which is worn to the point that the LCD is burned out).

I have to say that I was impressed with it.

BTW: The Eggbeater gets it name because it was a white HB who's paint has weathered to the point of being both white and yellow in certain sections

I have an EB myself, but everything is stock... if I have to go someplace with a lot of crime/theft, then I use that thing (nobody ever looks at it... too ugly). Never use your Sunday best if you don't have to.

Speaking of the home break-ins when people were home, my favorite at uni was when I had someone try sneaking in through the sliding glass door (the entrance door was unlocked) to my 2nd floor apt. Poor guy... I was sitting in my living room working on a friend's P7M8

This note would warrant the following reply if sent by me.

Could you provide the source of this information so that we can discern if the theif is picking one particular area over another? Has the police department mentioned that will step up patrols in the area given that there is a known problem? (If it's a gated lot) What is being done to prevent unauthorized persons from entering the lot? Will there be extra security patrols? What is the company doing to protect my safety with a known danger in the area?

And lastly, Why didn't you say that the first line of defense is locking our doors?

/sarcasm

Actually the thing that caught my interest was the whole "you should be aware of our surroundings" bit.

Be aware of your surroundings... if you can't figure out what your surroundings are, and you're the security for the area, it's no wonder that peole are breaking into vehiles with reckless abandon

BTW: Never call local security unless absolutely necessary, call the real police first, and then security. There's usually a reason that those guys don't make it into the academy in the first place

there's a reason we call them the facility nazi/parking nazi. if you're not parked straight, or your "on the line"...the whole building gets an email for the person to move the car.

I like the shotgun shell under the seat setup with a special circuit key to disengage it. You do have to make sure you always disengage. Or alternatively, it works off a wireless with a transmitter you wear. Car gets more than few blocks and the thief gets a hysterectomy.
you just need one of those james bond style cars thats impossible to break into
and even if it does you could always use that remote control cell phone to drive it right back (which movie was that from anyway?) or off a cliff for that matter
post #18 of 29
Haven't home owners been jailed for such things? That whole pesky thing about people and their "rights"

Still, I'd pay real money to see someone use plastic explosives as part of an auto security system
post #19 of 29
there is a good one like that in the darwin awards when some theif sets off the airbag while stealing a car...it hits him...he shoots his gun...its still in his pants pocket...you get the idea
