How fast are AMD 64 bit processors compared to Intel's high end Pentium M processors?

O.K, I have a Intel Pentium M (dothan) 2.00GHz processor with 2GB RAM. In my opinion, it's blazing fast! My startup is about probably less than 1 minute. But how do I compare this to the current 64 bit processors made today from AMD and Intel. How fast are 64 bit processors compared to this setup. From research, Pentium M 2.00Ghz are just as fast as most 64 bit and dual core processors. How can this be? Aren't they future. Microsoft says that Windows Vista would even run better on 64 bit processors. In my opinion, a Intel Pentium M would probably be even better. Can someone with heavy processsor knowledge and experience elaborate on this more.

just a quick note on this - the Pent M and most other proc for PC's are 32 bit so 64 bit proc move twice the amt of data in a given period of time... however, virtually all PC software available now is 32 bit so there's no advantage to using a 64 bit proc... BUT when you run 64 bit software you certainly will see a performance benefit for CPU intensive processes...

hope that helps

An A64 MT 1.6 GHz (25w) will beat a PM-1.6 in almost all benchmarks. The PM 1.6 has better battery life, but it's actually fairly close. The A64 can ofcourse run future 64 bit software, which is nice to know.
