Notebook as a Desktop (Display) Monitor ? Please leave your opinion.

Hello Everybody,

I am using a notebook (Toshiba Stallite A20) right now. As you know it is not quite easy to play games over a standart notebook since they don't have good video card. So does mine. It is a Trident CyberAladdin 32 mb which supports nothing.

Since I want to play games, I am thinking to buy a new desktop Pc. But I am short space and money. So I thought , it may sound weird, whether I can connect my desktop pc to my notebook and use it as a monitor while both are running or not. (only for monitor, not keyboard and mice)

Is such a thing possible? Can it be from USB or PCMCIA?

If you have experienced or heard something like this, I would be grateful for your replies.

Thanks.

If you ever opened up a notebook you will find that the notebook LCD is actually connected to the mainboard through a few parallel wires and a port. It is highly possible that that port is just a regular VGA port. You may be able to dissect the wires and connect it to a regular VGA female plug, thus plugging the notebook LCD to a standard desktop.

is it possible to find the schematics of the notebook?

Large manufacturers may list detailed service diagrams on their website. I know Dell and IBM do just that, not sure about Toshiba though.

Thanks a lot deltawalkerl. I have posted this thread in a few forums but you are the only one who replied back. You gave me an idea. I'll try it.

I am not sure how you are going to attempt this, but don't use a VGA plug. It turns out that commercial and notebook LCD's use an interface called LVDS. I don't know if you know this already. LVDS is similar to DVI-D, but not exactly the same. There is a Multilink LVDS --> DVI-D adapter, but that costs $799.

Thanks a lot XSternMinator. But I am told that that software is not appropriate for my problem.

Unfortunately, that's the closest thing I can think of that'd allow you to use your lappy as a monitor :<
