External Hard Drive not recognized by Windows....

Hey guys, I need some help. Ok I have this external hard drive hooked up to my XPS on USB and some how, the whole Hard Drive got "Read-Only" so I could not save files onto it or defrag it. I have no idea how it got like that. But anyway, I tried to get it back to normal by going to the "Device Manager" and disable it but then it completely dissappeared from the device manager after I disabled it. So I have no idea how to enable it now. I have tried disconnecting the HD and plugging it back but Windows does not recognize it at all. It does not show up anywhere. I have even rebooted my lappy but nothing. Can someone please help me to enable it back and get it to run like normal? Thanks

can you post a screen shot of your device manager with the usb section expanded? Seems strange it dissapeared...but what did you exactly disable and is this entry still in the device manager?

I disabled the external HD thinking it would resolve my problem of the HD being "Read-Only".

The entry is no longer in the device manager under Disk Drives....

Do you know what the 'unknown device' is under the usb controllers? Try installing that...should install as USB Mass Storage Device and then your HDD should appear under Disk Drives...

O.k. I was messing around in the "Computer Management" and I must have pressed something and the drive showed up under disk drives but it had a red x on it. So I right clicked it and enabled it and now it works and its not "Read-Only" anymore. Thanks
