If that's the case, I'll have a good think about it today. I take it system exchange is only a valid option within the returns policy?

Amazin asian: It doesn't happen all the time.. it happens roughly 1/3rd of the time, and that probably isn't even an accurate figure since I've only ever done an overnight hibernate 5-6 times. But yes, I do tend to think it's either gonna happen to people, or not at all.

If you get another bad notebook with the system exchange. Within 21 days from when it was shipped you can return it for a full refund and get free return shipping. You pay for restocking and shipping if you choose just to return it without trying a system exchange first.

But system exchange is only part of the returns policy right? As in, it's not a subset of the warranty Dell covers? By that I mean, I must apply for a system exchange before the returns policy expires.. so I can't go say, 6 months later, 'Hey Dell, something wrong with my machine.. come down and exchange it for me'.

As long as you have a warranty, you can get a system exchange if something like the bios acts up, or the lcd dies. But to get a new notebook with system exchange, it needs to be done in the 21 day evaluation period which starts from when it's shipped. After that time, all repairs and system exchanges will use used parts and notebooks, and you have to keep it regardless.

Well the used parts isn't a huge issue for me.. it's more about whether I'll still end up having a laptop at all times during the ordeal. I.e instead of it being a situation where I get to keep the laptop until I get mailed the exchange, I'll have to return the old laptop first before they actually send me the replacement..

But regarding the 'you have to keep it regardless' part, what if the exchange is faulty as well? I'm sure I can just apply for another system exchange right? As long as I'm still within warranty, of course.

I think so. Not sure.
