Talk me OUT of Sager & Dell and INTO an AW m5700, please. - Page 5

Thread Starter
Yang: Take it from me, man. I've been riding for about a year + and I am so glad I took the motorcycle safety courses. They're worth every dollar (it's around $300 or so) spent. I took all the proper steps in getting training, a starter bike (YZF 600R, which is comparable to a CBR 600 in the 90's), and then finally stepped up to my dream bike, the R6.

An R1 or a GSX-R 750 is A LOT OF BIKE to take on for a starter. This is not an area where you want to get an ego, because you have about a %70+ crash probability. And you will cry because you're ebaying parts on your brand new bike.

As for a Honda F3 (CBR 600 basically), Honda F2, Yamaha YZF 600R, Yamaha FZR 600, Kawasaki Ninja 600 are all great starter bikes that will cost you from $2k - $4k, depending on year, milage, and title (don't get a savlaged bike, unless you really want to save. I just prefer it to be clean).

If you want the steps in a nut shell:

1) Take the moto lessons. They provide everything for you, including the bike. It's about $300 and will have schedules to conform to yours.

2) Buy gear. DO THIS FIRST! Because if you get the bike first without gear, then you will want to ride it soooooooooo bad, and you will definately take that chance. Think of it as your new Aurora 7700 just came in, and you don't have the OS to install and fully boot it up. You're going to take it out of the box anyway. :P

3) Do research on the starter bike that fits you. Most 1990-200 600cc bike will probably work for you. Look on craigslist, or BARF (explained below)

4) Once you've found it, make sure to bring a friend with you when taking a look at it. Never go alone, because you won't know wtf you're looking at, and what to look for.

Oh hell, just ask me man, I'll be glad to help you get started. For starters and information, start here:

Bay Area Riders Forum (aka BARF): www.bayarearidersforum.com
Tons of info, ask anybody anything and they'd help you out most likely. Some are not as kind and/sweet like this forum. You'll discover a lot of trolls and flamers, ect ect. But just be genuine. And don't start off saying you want a GSX-R 750 or R1 on their. It's a thread asking to be flamed. Just ask questions.

If you have any general questions or anything I could help you with, let me know I'd be glad to spread the word. Later,

Hi all!

Logiks I just want to thank u, and all the people that participate in this forum, because u're dilemmas really helped me out with my decision and I think sager 5720 will be my choice..

I can't settle for anything less than max power and that's just the way I am..
Hope I can crunch all the money I'll need for it on time since I need it for work (web design and all the splendor that goes with it).

I also ride a motorcycle, and I'm glad to see more bikers out there that love laptops..

And a small request for everyone please.. if you know any way that I can save an extra penny on that 5720 (or another laptop with 7800gtx) please PM me or leave the info here.
I am really broken down to peaces lately as far as money situation is (mostly because of the bike I recently purchased),,
The 2k+$ price that I'm looking at now is already stretched beyond u're beliefs.

Thank you all once again..

btw this is my bike.. gsxr1000 k3

With the AW's, you get an Alienware recovery CD that is actually a windowsXP cd with an Alienware label. I believe you can put XP on two machines, but you should contact microsoft and make sure first if that's a deal breaker.

If you do go Sager, buy it from PCTorque, they're the sponsors of these forums.
Can't you get a 7800GTX with the m5700? I'm pretty sure both the 6800 and the 7800GTX both use the MXM-III Module, so I think you can put a 7800GTX in an m5700

thanks for the information Hammer and Logiks!! I'll definitely look into all the suggestions...I'm just a little wary of getting on a bike and I want to take lessons before I jump on one since I've lost a couple of friends due to stupid drivers.

Well, they do offer upgrades, but only once they have passed AW's quality control. If a part is not stable, they will not offer it. Right now, the 7800gtx puts out too much heat for the m5700 cooling system to handle.

Yeah, I used to ride up 101 or 280 from Mountain View to San Francisco every day. Other drivers are definitely the biggest hazzard in the bay area. Thankfully, there are canyon roads nearby so you can get away from the traffic fairly easily if you know where to go.

The biggest problem I had when learning was trusting the front brake, and that the front wouldn't slip out on corners. I'd end up crossing the line occasionally on tight corners. Luckily, nobody was coming the other way...

Riding classes give you excersises that show you the capability of the bike, so you learn to trust the equipment, and will get you to understand your limits much quicker than if you learn on your own. It's amazing how far you can lean bikes over nowadays, and the brakes are almost scary good.

Maybe Alienware is so succesful because they don't do any of the stuff the other places do, like Dell, Sager, Voodoo or Hypersonic.

You can get an Alienware laptop with the 7800, just not the 5700... yet...
