Found this off of digg.com

There article doesn't give much of an explanation, but says the yonah chips are 64-bit.

interesting, but does Windows XP 64-bit edition recognize it? doubtful.

Actually that makes some sense because Merom is going to be released initially on the Napa chipset, which is used by Yonah.

That's pretty ridiculous, so why can't we use 64 bit programs?

i dont think that fact means that yonah is 64-bit.

my guess is that intel incorporated the 64-bit ability but it uses more power than when in purely 32-bit mode and also intel doesnt feel the need to market 64-bit yet because amd doesnt have mobile dual core 64-bit yet. intel might be testing the waters to see if they can keep 64-bit exlcusive to merom to push sales of that when it comes out. if dual core turion comes soon and in a major way, we might see a bios update to unlock 64-bit.

More than likely something along the lines of the old P4s which had the HT switched off in the core.

I doubt anyone's going to get to enable those 64bit extensions in Yonah though.

weren't there some intel ht models where you could turn on the ht later on thru some kind of patch? maybe intel will do a similar thing with these? thats the only way I'd get one.

No it wasn't a patch ( as far as I'm aware), it was a socket adapter to enable hyperthreading in the Northwood b's in which by default only the 3.06 model had enabled.

maybe they are saving it as a "save our butts if Turion dual core kicks our product" thing

You mean like a BIOS feature? Cause if they somehow unlock it in the core for a new stepping, I think a few people would be unhappy....

i wonder if it has the VT on it too...

I do not think, that they have 64bit intructions. But the core duo has vanderpool support locked. In summer will be yonahs available with 64bit support, not yet.

But what do you expect from 64bit? Double speed? No, nothing you will feel.

I have runnning for months my nforce3 amd64 3200 PC with a pure 64bit linux system. UT2004 64bit also tried. The situation is, that all drivers and apps have to be written/compiled with 64bit instructions and the system have to support it. In linux the most is done since years...

But windows users are living behind the moon with the 64bit situation, until Vista is coming in the end of 2006 or maybe next year, who knows. Then intel is driving with microsoft on one line.

32bit greetings,
Marcus

You know this smacks of the Prescott days..

Yonah 64 bit won't amount to anything. They won't really do 64 bit on mobile till Merom, and if there ARE circuits on Yonah for 64 bit they'll never get activated. 64 bit was buried in Prescott too, but eventually the only thing that came of that is "buy a new mobo and new cpu and you can have 64 bit", so caveat emptor...

If one goes up, so must the other

Speaking of latin an economics professor of mine was always partial to Certeris Perabis, which I think really applies here.
