Very few people can predict RAM prices 6 months ahead of time....
post #102 of 136

a rough estimate

But a rough estimate? 500 bucks? 200 bucks?

Right now it's running about $119 for a 1GB DIMM. No one can say what it will be in 6 months. Worth noting is the 533MHz PC 4200 is about $99. So that's only $20 more which is kind of erritating. Imagine what the difference would have been for Acer to buy it in bulk and actually use it in the systems. That just indicates to me that it has to be an availablility issue.

Yall can get the 1gb DDR667 ram here, that's where I bought it:

iNsAnEcLoWn,

Let us know the if you notice any performance difference between the 533 and 667 ram. Do you have it already?

No not yet, don't call me a spoiled brat though, I sold the 2gb 533 ram to my parents who just purchased the Aspire 5670, and I just ordered 2gb 667 ram yesterday, hasn't shipped yet, but I should get it by tuesday (2 day shipping free) and if yall want I will do some benches.

So what are the timings on the memory we are getting with the 8204?

2 months ago, a Sandisk 2 gig SD card sold for $219 CDN in my part of the world.... Same store now carries it for $99...
Not quite the same as laptop memory, but similar enough to compare...
2 months ago, I would never have guessed a 1/2 price chop in such little time. I would have thought even less about that 6 months ago...

Best guestimate I can give on future cost for 667 RAM? Most likely cheaper than current prices...

Has everyone given up on getting Acer to exchange their DDR2 533 RAM for 667 ? I know they have changed their specs now so it doesn't apply to new notebook buyers. But in the case of early adopters, if they dont make good on their promise, it would be false advertising on their part.
I still have an ongoing dialog with Acer and TigerDirect about this.

Definitely have not given up yet. I'm in the same boat as you. I'm waiting to hear back from both Acer and TigerDirect.

Where did you buy the ram?

Hey, when you get your laptop, can you run Sandra 2005 on it. My review has a download link and also lists the benchmark figures for DDR2 533.

Hrmmm... the product title at that page says "Corsair VS1GSDS667D2 1GB DDR2-667 PC2-5300 Value Select SO-DIMM Memory Retail" but the product specs say:

Retail
Speed: PC2-5300
Size: 512MB
Organization: 64Mx64
Package: 200 SODIMM

So is it 512MB or 1GB? Probably worth confirming!
post #115 of 136
I'd be careful that you're not buying a 1GB pair (i.e., 2X512MB)
post #116 of 136
NO it is correct, it's just mislabeled. How do I know? Well for one the sku is correct and for 2 they labeled the Corsair 512mb like this:
* Retail
* Speed: PC2-5300
* Size: 1GB
* Organization: 128Mx64
* Package: 200 SODIMM
lol

Here are some more links to prove my point (which are labeled correctly with the 'VS1GSDS667D2' (1GB Stick) sku:

I was just browsing the Acer website in the UK, and interestingly they advertise the Ram with both speeds.
http://www.acer.co.uk/acereuro/page4...crc=2428054185.

Why is it different from the US?
post #118 of 136
I don't understand what the big deal is in the first place.

The bus speed of the Core Duo's is 667MHz, the bandwidth of the dual channel memory (whether it operates at 533MHz or 667MHz) is going to be greater than the bandwidth of the bus in either case. It makes no difference anyway. That is why (as someone mentioned in this thread) the speed differnece between 533MHz and 667MHz is ~25%, and the 3DMark score difference is less then 5%.
post #119 of 136
mobile... wel we don't know for sure.. the only one who can test the difference is insaneclown.... when he makes the benchmarks and compares 533 ram vs 667 ram.... we will see the difference in pratical terms.

Thanks,

I think the pertinent question is this. Had Acer not made the mistake of advertising 667MHz RAM, and had always had 533MHz listed, would anyone here have thought twice about ordering the system?

Personally, I was looking at the 2GB RAM itself, and wouldn't have noticed that it was "only" 533MHz. I think the issue isn't whether or not DDR2-4200 RAM is adequate (it sure is for me; my 8204 performs better than any system I've ever owned, and quite well enough), but rather that Acer listed the wrong specs.

Granted, that's an issue, but it has nothing to do with the performance of the system per se.
