Now that's how you do it!

I'm sure that Acer will do the right thing. It _is_ interesting to think, though, about how such a thing happened... Again, maybe it's because PC2-5300 RAM is in short supply, but still, it's so clearly a case of Acer shipping something that's unquestionably wrong that it's hard to imagine it being merely an oversight.

I'm sure that Acer's resellers will be none too pleased, as well, as they start getting RMA requests based on the incorrect part...

The matter of the memory being of short supply is not an excuse for them to do what they did. The proper thing to do was to hold off shipments of the device untill proper memory is available and installed. They abused the fact that no one would look inside the hardware specs, they thought everyone would be impressed by the machine as it is and would overlook that minor detail (minor in their opinion). This is totally wrong.

I know this is not the issue at hand, but has someone found a source for 2gb DDR2 5300 SODIMMs? I keep hearing people mention about upgading to 4 gb.

Samkatta, I think it's all speculation at this point. I'm willing to give Acer the benefit of the doubt; mistakes _do_ happen. Heck, I've even made a few myself...

Of course, I don't have my 8204 yet, so perhaps that explains my generosity at this point. But, when I get mine next week (knocking on wood), if I get the wrong RAM, I'll still give Acer a chance to make amends.

Yah I emailed Acer Support, and going to call on monday to see what the deal is. I am not going to bother with the retailer that I bought it at (I do not want to exchange it because I have no problems with mine and no dead pixels!) Although I might just call them to say that I got ddr533 instead of ddr667.

oh and by the way I got mine at pcsuperstore.com not pcnation like I originally said.
I also have 533 not the 667 according to CPUZ. I ordered mine from Tiger in the first batch they had on 2-2.

got mine from tigerdirect

OK. just checked mine this morning and its a pc2 - 4200. Not too happy with them at this point.

they are saying 2 weeks

ACER is unbelievable. If it were not for this site...many of us would have been ripped off by this vendor. I am upset I don't have what I bought and they are now saying it will take another two weeks to get the right chip in (and I still have to call back). I complained and asked for a supervisor but they are going to give me a call w/i 24hours.

Just got off the phone. Great experience so far. They were unaware of this issue (of course) and my guy had to check all over. Looks like an error. He does not have the part number so he is going to call me back to set up an exchange. He gave me an SRN number in the event I had to call them back but he said it will be no problem at all to get me the right stuff, just needs to make sure he has the correct part number for the order so he doesn't ship me the wrong RAM. He will be calling me back by this afternoon and said it will be super easy and they will include a pre paid package to return the wrong RAM in. So, that fixes that. Just thought I would share. Looks like their not going to put up a fight. He even apologized for the mistake. First experience with Acer support and it was great...so far so good.

hey czm2000, what number did you call and who was the guy you talked to? thanks
post #34 of 136
I think that's a perfectly reasonable response, and even if it takes a few weeks to get the RAM, I don't see that as a problem. In fact, I would rather get my 8204 on Wednesday with the wrong RAM, then be able to exchange, than wait a few more weeks (as some vendors are doing) to get the system at all.

Of course, Acer could change their specs and/or make sure their resellers are communicating the right specs, and then they could even sell the units with PC2-4200. It's just the lack of accuracy that's a problem.

I think acer will handle this well... they just moved to #3 on the laptop provider and they want to keep up their rep... they will do whats right... (i hope)

Well I've got a .pdf screen shot in the event that they try to say it was just a case of mistaken info being on their website and they change it to 533MHz. This is going to be an expensive proposition for them to try and replace all the RAM of people who request it. I would expect them to try and change the specs to 533MHz and make good on any current customer complaints. The problem is this is the high end Travelmate and the 5672 has the 667MHz as a spec and actually shipped with it. That's hardly fair. It will be intersting to see how it all plays out. I'm happy that my call went well and I already have begun the process to have mine swapped out at no charge. I can't believe that this thing could get much faster as it's already a rocket, but faster is faster and I will take it. Especially since that's what I feel I ordered and paid for. I think Acer wants to be a leader and you don't get to number one by screwing your customers. I truly think they made an hoest mistake. Now all they have to do is make good on correcting it.

Sorry, I missed your question. I just called the support number that is in the suport information in the System Properties dialog box. Right click on my computer and then choose properties to get there. Then click on the Support Information button. All the numbers and info to get a hold of Acer is right in there. I actually don't recall his name. I will try and remember to ask him when he calls back. It was one of those things where I had been on hold for a while (about 20 minutes) and I was doing some work so when he came on I was taken off gaurd and was trying to switch gear so I missed the first couple of sentences he spoke. I was then to busy answering his questions and then explaining my situation. I would just give them a shout. They all have to know about it by now.

I did, I called them and they said they all ship with ddr 533, oh well. I like this notebook a lot! Let me know if you get your ddr 667 and I will ask for the guy that you called.
