interesting.. in my limited time of usage, my laptop has already frozen twice.. i wonder if I have the same problem. Also, I've lost about 10 CDs while trying to create the 9 CD recovery disc.. but that could be due to my old CDRs..

Yeah this pretty much sucks. Mine is just stuck in a memory dump and won't do anything else.

sorry to hear the problems, but what about doing clean install... I have HP MCE z552 that came with tons of crap and I uninstalled most of it, but it still freezes up and reboots sometimes...

I'm guessing its the vid drivers. You using the ones from sony's site or some hacked one?

Tried both with no luck. Wouldn't even reboot in the end. I have never had bad display drivers cause these kinds of problems. I need a laptop that works and this just isn't cutting it.

What's the plan? Are you going to return it?

Good question. Asus w3j..14" duo with x1600. Mackbook pro maybe if they announce 13.3 or smaller.

Sorry to hear it cdd. I've gone beyond 2nd thoughts and am now into 3rd, 4th and 5th. If that W3J was out now this discussion/ thought process simply would not be taking place.

Any idea what the issue might have been with the last machine? Was it working OK before you switched the video drivers? Bad memory?

I just received my customized SZ140 (2.0GHz, 100GB HD, 1GB RAM, WebCam/Bluetooth, Fingerprint security, etc.).

I'm currently working on a clean install of XP Pro. But before I began, I confirmed that the SZ140's nVidia 7400 only has 128MB "available" -- both via nVidia's and Direct X's settings. Unfortunately, I was unable to confirm how much of that is actually dedicated VRAM, but I suspect it's only 32MB -- the rest coming from system RAM via TurboCache.

Does anyone know if there's a way to adust the TurboCache settings? And if so, how exactly do you do it? I couldn't find any references to TurboCache within nVidia's settings. So perhaps there's a way to unlock those settings?

Thanks,

SonyVaioFan

Not sure. I switched the ram immediately before even turning it on. The ram was crucial ram that has been run in other machines without issue(memtest). I guess it is possible that it didn't likve?e the ram.
It was acting up with both drivers.

I would have jumped on the asus if had been available as well. The specs are great! When does your arrive?

Run SisSandra 05. Mine showed 128 with xxx additional memory available(128/130. I just don't remember exactly what it said. I compared it to my 560 and it showed 32/ ~200.

I order an SZ140 with the exact specs on 1/27 and my order still says "ship date unknown". Where did you order yours from and on what date?

I ordered from SonyStyle.com on 1/24 -- the 1st day they accepted orders.

FYI, my order was originally estimated to ship on 2/2. But on 2/3, I received an email from SonyStyle.com saying the new estimated ship date was 2/17. The email also said my order's shipping method would be upgraded for free to the next level of servce, due to the delays. Well, the good news is that my order actually shipped on 2/15. But the bad news is that SonyStyle didn't honor their promise -- they shipped my order via ground service. Yet SonyStyle was far from apologetic about the whole thing. They said they intentionally did not upgrade the shipping method, since my order was ready to ship "sooner than expected".

So if you received one of those emails, my advice would make some noise at SonyStyle.com before your order ships. Otherwise, the same thing might happen to you, too.

Thanks... I took your advice, and here's what I'm getting on my SZ140:

The numbers don't seem to add up, so I'm not sure what this means. ... any ideas?

EDIT:
I just noticed the the Texture Memory is reported as 307MB. And since 123MB Video + 184MB System = 307MB, I'm guessing:

1) Dedicated VRAM = 128MB (5MB is currently in use, leaving 123MB available?)
2) 184MB additonal RAM is available via TurboCache (all from system RAM)

... am I on the right track here, or is this just wishful thinking?

No idea. Sony keeps pushing back the date. Still sez out of stock.
I may never find out. On the verge of cancelling the whole shebang and getting a Dell E1705.
