It does not latch closed, but it does have a small protruding edge you can use to pull the screen open. I will take some comparison shots tonight next to the s560.

pic of bottom as requested.

two..same size as s560 if that helps. 5 1/2L-2 1/2W-1thick in inches.

Just ran 3dmark 05 with 2 gigs 667 ram and got a slight jump in score. Up to 2049. This beat my previous high with the latest drivers from laptop2go.
Oclocked to "optimal" settings 754/475. Tempted to go higher...but it is a laptop.

I bought it at ramjet. I think the 533 is fine though.

So I have posted plenty about the nice performance of this unit. Now some negatives. Things you notice after using it a week or so.

The wireless switch seems to be pressing into the plastic surrounding the lcd and is causing an imprint that mirrors the switch. Not good.

Battery life does not appear that it is going to be close to the 6 hour time fram sony claimed. I am getting about 3:45 when things are turned down..screen, processer, etc. I will do a dvd test tonight.

If battery is not locked or mistakenly "unlocked" on one side the unit will completely lose power rather easlily when moving it.

The hard drive protection comes on ver easily as if very little movement activates it. I know this is what it is for, but I am rather gentle when moving it around. Probably not a big deal.

I still have to say that the keyboard is an utter disaster.

Gotta post the good and bad.

Too bad!!! Isn't it that usb 2.0 drain issue? Have you already make those changes in XP as were posted somewhere? I just cant' find where they are...

Hmm. Only thing I have connected is a mouse and I am not sure if it is 2.0.
post #56 of 144
maybe the webcam is usb2.0? So that could be draining the battery
post #57 of 144
yea...read the whole AT article.

With the fix, both W5F and W5A get another hour of battery life (they connected no other usb devices excepted the built-in usb 2.0 camera.)

just try to apply this registry fix and see how the battery life goes..(remember to restart your computer after you've applied the fix)

That first item bothers me. So you close the lid and the switch is actually under pressure from the the LCD? I can't imagine Sony would let a design go through that would permit that.

Is the hard drive protection software driven? Can you turn it off?

In regards to the battery, I just noticed this on the Sony website. To wit:

VAIO® SZ Series

* Intel® Centrino™ Mobile Technology available with select VAIO notebooks.
* Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional
* Up to 4.5 hours1 of battery life
* 2 GB RAM & 100GB3 hard drive
* 13.3"4 wide screen WXGA display with XBRITE™ technology
* Explore the SZ-Series

I don't think it said that a week ago and it still says 6 hours standard and 7 hours premium in the specs.

cdd543: What do you think of the screen after a week?

The screen is still beautiful. I am very impressed at its gaming abilities.
I am playing bf2 with all settings on medium, 100% draw and 2x aa and it is very smooth and looks pretty good.
I imagine I can turn off the hd protection.
Yes the switch must be barely pressing into the screen. I will monitor it.
I noticed that battery time change as well.
