Should I wait to buy a laptop

Thread Starter
I want to buy a laptop, but I'm not sure if I should wait until the this summer (i.e., June or July). I have the money to buy one, so that's not a factor. My budget is $1550. My current computer is a 533MHz Celeron with 256MB RAM, which is barely sufficient, and I'm dual-booting Windows XP Pro and Ubuntu Linux. I want to use the new one for school, programming, Internet, and playing games.

Do you think it would be wise to wait considering that Windows Vista is (supposedly) coming out this year? Will laptop hardware be considerably better 4 months from now?

I'm considering this one (ASUS Z70Va Centrino) - http://www.avadirect.com/product_det....asp?PRID=5661 - with the following customizations (it includes a PCI Express ATI X700 128MB graphics card):
  • 1.73GHz 533MHz FSB Pentium M processor
  • 1GB 533MHz PC4200 RAM
  • 60GB 8MB cache Samsung HDD
  • A/B/G built-in wireless
  • No OS included

*EDIT* What I mean to say is, will I be able to get a laptop with considerably better specs in 4 months from now for the same price as the one above (e.g., the processor clock and FSB speeds)?

I think the presumption is that duo-core and 667FSB is about to hit the 15.4 market between now and the middle of the year. Dell is definitely coming out with some upgraded models based on a leaked excel spreadsheet someone found with what most believe are the next generation of Dell's line of laptops, including a i6400 which looks like a duo core i6000. Other vendors probably either have the same plan or will follow suit. Of course, this is all speculation.

Does that mean you should wait? I dunno ...I didn't, but I'm not the kind to jump on the latest and greatest 10 seconds after it is released.

Merom is being released in August. Vista in September, end of September.

Yes, I think you really should wait for Intel Merom and Microsoft Vista.

No. Unless Intel decides they're losing the mobile market and feels like dumping processors, which I don't really see happening before the end of the decade.

Maybe in 6 months to a year.

BTW, if you need the notebook now, or if this is the only chance you see of getting one, get it now. If you can wait, wait.

I don't think you need to worry about waiting for Vista, but you may want to wait for the dual-core machine you like best.

The question "should I wait" makes little to no sense when it comes to computers. That's because they keep evolving so fast that you can't really expect it to settle down. The answer to that question is quite simple: what you buy now is adequate for what you do now. No computer is future proof.

Besides, to me it seems that everything out today is quite adecuate for anything but games. If you don't game, buy a cheap used Centrino. I recommend you a T series Thinkpad. It will cost you like half of what you have, so you can invest the rest upgrading it. You can easily put 2GB of RAM, a 100GB 7200rpm hard drive, a DVD Burner, etc.

The transition to 64 bits will be more like the transition from 16 to 32 bits. The first 32 bit processor was the 386, released in late 80s I belive. There was Windows NT, but it didn't became mainstream until Windows XP. That's almost a decade.

So don't worry about 64 bit compatibility. They simply can't ignore perhaps thoushands of millions of 32 bit computers already available. I think they are trying to make the transition quicker by integrating 3D functions, wich many old computers either lack or are severely limited at. Either way, Windows Vista will be released for 32 bits.
