Dell 9300 LCD Issue - Big Vertical White Stripe

I've had my 9300 for over a year and love it. I was using my laptop Friday night and walked away to do something on my desktop. When I came back, the screensaver was on and there was this 1.5 inch vertical white/gray stripe on the left part of the screen from top to bottom. I can still see things in that area but they are lightened. It went away the next time I turned on the laptop but has come back everytime after that.

Maybe something is loose? Anyone have any ideas?

I have a small picture of the screen but don't know how to post it.

Any help appreciated.

Try updating the video card drivers.

Restart your notebook and press F2 at the dell logo screen. This is BIOS.
Please tell us if you can see the screen problem here in bios.

Good point! That's a nice diagnostic step there--see if the problem is there without the windows video driver...

Just tried the Bios/F2 thing and the stripe is there also.

Here's a link/thumbnail (thanks thorndt):

It's the bar that runs through the third row of icons where 'My Computer' is at the top. The other bar to the left really isn't there and is something the camera added.

Edit: The thumbnail itself doesn't even look quite right.

From the symptoms you listed, one possibility is a loosened LCD connector.

Another test--does the stripe still show up when your video card is in 3D mode (i.e. playing some 3D game)?
I'm trying to isolate the problem between the LCD/LCD connector/video card.

Well, since you saw it in bios. It's a hardware problem. You can try and see if it's plugged in properly. If it's plugged in right, then your lcd is broken. And it cannot be fixed.

I unplugged the connector and plugged it back in. Still no change. Oh well, I'll replace the LCD panel when I can't stand the stripe anymore. I did plug in an analog monitor to see if the stripe would appear and it didn't. This is one of those times when an extended warrantee would have come in handy, doh!

1. Did you unplug/replug all three connectors on the cable?
2. Did you examine the connectors/cable to make sure there was no damage/bent pins/etc.?

Just sayin'--it's best to be thorough.

I'm not convinced that is has to be the panel itself. It could be the video card, or even the cable (although much less likely).

If it was the vid card he would have had the problem when connected to external monitor, and a loose cable wouldn't be that much less likely as others have had the cable come loose, though the entire screen is usually garbled when this happens.

yeah right... if it's visible in the external monitor, then you have an issue on your video card.

-OR-
Your video card has issues in it's LCD port.

Hmm,...three connectors? Nope. I just popped off the panel just above the keyboard and unplugged/plugged in the connector just above the power switch. I'll have to check some more. Thanks for the suggestion.

BTW, this LCD issue started happening after about 2000 hours of troublefree usage. The laptop sits mostly on a desk, mostly.

Connector above the power switch should do because that is the display cable connector on system board.

Respectfully I have to disagree a bit here.

A cable, well, connects two or more components together; an intermittent contact at one end of the cable on one conductor, for example, will cause the exact same problem as an intermittent contact on the same conductor at the other end of the cable...

Just sayin'.

I am also experiencing a similar problem with my one year old 9200 Samsung WXUGA screen.
The lower horizontal third of my screen fades in and out of a shaded stripe of the screen color.

I have determined this to be a hardware problem. The screen will flicker this stripe when I tap the edge, for example, or when I tilt it forward or backward.
It does not seem to be the front connector to the mobo.

After more research, I will remove it and check the connections in the back of the screen.

I had just one week to go on my warranty when this problem appeared, but I chose not to send it in because I'm confident I can fix it, and because I have a matt finished, zero sparkle, zero dead pixel, WUXGA, otherwise perfect screen, and I did not want Dell to stick a glossy Truelife in it with a dead pixel in the middle.

I disassembled the LCD to disconnect and check all connections and everything looked fine. The stripe is still there on reassembly. Oh well.
