I think it is a very nice computer, and would love to hear your comments once you get it. Don't be a stranger.
I think AW may have lost him, but I don't think we have....................

Yep, I'm afraid it's official : AW has lost me - at least for laptops. I got my new one last night and ran 3dMark05 on it straight out of the box. I nearly fell over (see sig). I think the 7900 must make a heck of a difference.

Awesome, Chudd. I know I was very happy with my XPS 2, except for it being just a tad large for me (my husband loves it). The 1710 looks like a great system!

Hi Shazza,

this is the wrong forum for a detailed review but I am seriously impressed with what I have seen of the 1710 so far. I can say however that it is fast and quiet. In fact, extremely quiet, even under load. I'm still "moving in" so to speak but initial impressions are good and I can't wait to see the scores once I've reformatted and am using one of the better drivers...

Perhaps the wrong forum for a detailed review, but perfectly right forum for a link to that detailed review

Enjoy!

Awww Shazza now I feel obligated to do a detailed review

However, I'll let you know once I have uploaded my "How to free your 1710 from the Dark Side and install Linux in 42 easy steps"

VERY COOL!!!!!! Makes me sorta wish I went your direction. However I am very Happy with what I have at this point. I just started playing Half-Life 2 last night and I can't stop saying WOW !

PS: the time it took to get a system that I could tolerate was long enough to feel like I'm outa-date now. (even though I know I have a kick-butt system)

Yeah, I've pretty much decided to shelve the AW idea for now... Probably go with best buy again [and an HP dv8000ish ]

very cool, Chudd ! very Happy to see you Happy ! I have been offline for a while since things have gotten crazy at work. Not only have I been pressed into tech service, I have been been doing some electrical engineering as well. I have been designing and testing headset amplifiers for our phone operators. Oh yeah, I almost forgot... I get to build all of them too... (somewhere around 300-400 units hard work but very very cool)

Still having fun in spite of a self inflicted chip reader issue !

I've been between two offices at work, and my project has kept me away from my terminal. Now things are starting to normalize again. After hours I've been doing a fair amount of flight prep since I don't have a lot of flight hours this year. I did an "annual" 4th of july over the fireworks (night flight) with my wife on board. It gives a totally new point of view when you are "above" the fireworks. Not to mention you see the entire city's display (about 20 of them in my town) at the same time. it's quite a sight.

I take you now two years later................ The system has had only one issue (Other than the crappy chip reader not working). Two weeks ago, on a trip, the Alienware Odyssey Backpack (with computer inside) rolled off of a chair and fell less than a foot on to a soft very padded carpeted floor. The system stopped booting at that point. You can imagine all the kinds of horrifying thoughts that popped into my head. After some terrifying moments like, where the crap to get a mb at and so forth, I find that the only thing wrong is one stick of memory went bad from the fall. Geeze... the easiest thing possible ! what luck ! The system for that past two years has been completely fantastic ! NO OTHER NEW ISSUES WHATSOEVER...... period. (One exception, chip reader, I can't repeat that too much !) . It's only this latest set of games that the it's even starting to show it's age... (the first time I could not max out everything, I knew the day would come sooner or later ) Everyone, I attribute most of that success to treatment. You MUST let the systems sit and cool on the windows desktop before shutting down (Put it away hot and you will subject the chips to 100% operational heat levels without any protection), and you also must keep the system clean (fans and heat exhausts mainly) . Also I do not believe that you should keep a notebook plugged in 100% time (all you guys from way back know my feelings on that). Plug to charge and to use and that's it, anything else is taking big risks. Well anyway enough preaching, The Adventure goes on !!!!

Thats good to hear. And that issue wasn't even due to Alienware. I've moved computers like that before and had similar issues but they've always turned out to be a loose video card or something.

The metal clips that hold the sodimm damaged the memory card edges ever so slightly that it would not seat properly (and I do mean slight ! I almost needed a magnifying glass to see it). Near as I can figure the fan housing on the memory pannel sits less than a millimeter from the top chip (Aurora M7700's chip holders are set one higher than the other kinda like a step), During the impact the two collided and caused the card edge damage. I actually had to fight to get the orginal memory in or out and when my new chip came it snapped in with bearly a touch and worked right away.
